Autoclose threads?

Since many people get crazy if you reply to a thread that hasn't had a reply in a while, There should be auto closing of threads so people do not get attacked for not wanting to make another thread and instead post a relevant reply to an older thread.

Someone thinks this is a dumb idea and not willing to post in here stating why its a dumb idea in their opinion.

If people do not want to get attacked then stop bumping old threads.
Technology should not compensate for a lack of thought.

If they think it was worth bumping then let them bump. No reason to create a whole system to micro manage it.

Actually, this idea has been put forward in different ways and they all result in the same two things:
1. Limit the user.
2. Not gonna happen.

A week ago or so I was thinking people want to limit others while a simple reminder could work just as well. How about a popup to remind the user a thread has not been posted in for X amount of time and are they sure they want to continue?
That way they get neg repped for a reason if it's just a post count boost but if it's relevant or whatever the thread is still usable.

Just a thought by an insomniac.

One way is to close threads automatically that is more than an year so that people won't dig and reply to older posts (exception to BST threads)

Sometimes there is a point to bumping an old thread and it would be impossible for a system to determine which threads to close and which to keep open, so I don't think this is a good idea.

Good idea to auto-close thread after a set period of time. If someone wishes to reopen/bump it, then there should be a popup window asking the member whether (s)he really wants to bump the thread that is xxx (45~180 days) days old...

The bumper has enough warning with this, and the following flames, if any, by other members can be justifiable (or not) depending on how important the bump was.

It just some members freak out even over 14 days of no new posts and then a new post is in the thread. I personally dont care if a thread is 10 years old and someone posts in it.

Old threads have tons of banned users and inactive members as well. As far as the software goes, a new thread is basically a post with replies so creating new threads is almost like posting a regular comment, no overhead on the forum system, so starting fresh discussions is usually socially easier. Not that I care about 2008 discussions being bumped 5 years into the future, but the entire discussion before the bump is outdated by default when you do that.

I would put them into 2 categories:

1. Newbies posting 'thank you' replies to increase their post count. I suspect some people think if the thread is old, their reply goes under the radar. These are pointless.

2. Someone is searching the forum and finds an older thread which contained useful information. I don't mind these at all as often they are threads I have not seen. Also, the reply can contain a new idea on an old method, which again is useful. These resurrected threads are not pointless.

My opinion - I don't mind seeing the pointless ones if occasionally there is something I find worthwhile.
