That's a very bad idea, believe me.
Well if you are moderating the posts anyhow than you could use WP All Import. Just go to the official wordpress site and search for WP all import. It's a WP addin that works with RSS feeds. You have to manually trigger the import, but it works pretty well in my experience. I'll also note that it's really retarded that I can't properly say wordpress org. Seriously mods?

Yes and No. I prefer to not use this word anymore. The modern professional content aggregation plugins for WordPress allow to create almost any sort of auto-generated sites which can't be called just autoblogs, because in fact they don't look like blogs and they have a really different functionality.
For example, these WP plugins allow to create self-populating tube sites, pinterest-style sites, various online shops, cool-looking online magazines and many more. These sites still use WP and they populates themselves on autopilot but they are not blogs anymore.
I believe we need a new word instead of "autoblog" to describe such a new generation of self-populating sites. Any suggestions?

The word "splog" is even more outdated than "autoblog".
Yeah, at least this one it sounds much better.
If something was shared and you can get it for free, that doesn't automatically made it the best one

No, that's not true. Because...The main slogan of Google now sounds like: "make sites for real people". The one who gets it right, knows how to make good self-populating sites which will be ok with Google.
In the post-Panda era Google does not care too much about your content (how big your articles are, how many keywords there etc). The most important factor is your visitors' behavior. If they (the visitors) love your site (bounce rate, on site time, depth of browsing, % of bookmarkers, etc), then Google will automatically consider it "as made for real people" and course it won't remove it from the SERP's.
Thus the most important thing is to make the surfers stay at your site longer and come back again and again.
Just a year ago it was a common practice to order a bunch of "unique" but boring and useless articles from 3rd-world copywriters and post them to a poor-looking blog with some boring or even default design. Now this won't fly because such sort of site will have an off-scale bounce rate, and site will be automatically penalized by Google as a low quality one.
On the other hand, a well-designed self-populating site which syndicates quality and properly sorted content such as images (there are tons of legal sources), videos (even from youtube and other resources that allow embedding), online games etc will catch the surfers for a long time. And nobody will care if your content is "unique" or not. If the visitors love your site then it "made for the real people". Yes, it is that simple!
P.S. When you are browsing Google Image Search for some "keyword" you are also looking at non-unique content, because Google doesn't generate it by itself, but it shows you something you wanted to see. The same practice works just fine with modern autoblogging (hate that word, but don't know how to re-phrase it according to the new times).
