Autoblogs aren't used anymore to make money, generally. Post panda they are now harder to rank and not worth your time. Usually the only way to optimize them is Adsense, and Adsense relies on quality content. Autoblogs are crap content, especially ones with spun articles. So no one will want to read your blog, or click on any ads.

They are used to join networks like Authority Link Network, Article Ranks, and many others. These networks work like so: You add blogs with high PR and then you get credits. You get credits because when you add your blog, it adds it to their network, allowing content to be submitted to them. The content is going to be highly spun, garbage stuff.

The credits you earn for adding your blog to their network and essentially turning it into an autoblog allow you to submit articles to their network and include your links. It's all for SEO and building backlinks. The autoblogs are usually just crap sites used to get into these networks without having to pay monthly to join. Usually these networks have monthly payment options, but if you add high PR blogs it's free.

EDIT: A commonly known plugin is WP Robot.

This is a an overly sweeping comment to make on a forum where there are any number of people who are continuing to build and sustain successful autoblogs, including post Panda. LOL, do the bashers of autoblogs who complain about their often crappy content, ever talk to the MNS bashers who complain about its often crap content? Both types of sites have been hit with the same charge.

Yes, inform the newbies of the obstacles like poor content, or ranking issues. But many of the sites are NOT built for WH SEO in the first place, and can be profitably optimized for things other than Adsense. A new person should simply use the search function and do a search for full discussions of autoblog trends, and make up their own mind.

It can still be done..but there is a learning curve. Besides that, there are tons of threads about it. How about trying 'search' ?

Check this thread, it's an old one but still useful. And don't forget to use search too.

Autoblogging can still be very successful if you do it right. Don't expect too much income from ad clicks, but links sales can more than make up for that. The link value on a site with so much targeted keyword density is way more than you would imagine.

And they don't all look like crap. With a good theme and careful planning you can make an autoblog look anything but automated. Here's a test site we use for AutoBlogged: http://weathered.us

I'd say that site would even pass one of Google's manual inspections.
