I am working on an authority site, have my kw's selected, and getting together articles based on them.

My question is, when I am building backlinks to the site for these kw's such as web2.0's, should I be directing them at the site (.....com), or directly at the page the article targeting the kw is on (.....com/article1)?

If I direct them at the article, will only that specific page/article rank for the term, or will it carryover and help rank the main site for the kw?

In short, you want to be building backlinks to both the homepage and the inner page. If you've done your on-site interlinking correctly, a link to one page will pass some juice to the other page. Unless you can simulate the inner page going viral, I would not build all the links to that one page.

My opinion is that the homepage should have some strong high PR links, targeting the most important keywords of your site. But, keep in mind that you might want to rank some long tail keywords, therefore it's better to build dedicated pages and links for them, too.

Don't attempt to rank two pages on your site for the same keyword.

Build links to the url you want to rank for your chosen keyword. If it's an internal url, point the links to it. If it's your homepage, point the links to it.

When you build links to internal pages, your homepage and other urls benefit from it as long as pages of your site are properly interlinked.

It sounds like backlinks for the main keywords should be built to the homepage, and the articles should be based on longtails or secondary keywords, which then have corresponding links directly to them.

Yes, but you'll have to be very careful about your anchor text percentages if you approach it like that.

Is very important not to overoptimize your anchor texts (with backlinks and interlinks). You can should always be tracking your ranking and see if the improve or get worst.

More links only to homepage looks spam and irrelevant(if the article1 page is little different from homepage)
Links to innerpage makes sense of linking thing and also helps in increasing overall site authority and relevancy. More authority to website is more authority for homepage to rank better.
