With any secondary property, Web 2.0s as being in that group, I do not link to anything but my money sites.

Usually just one but if the Web 2.0 is built out I may link more than once to the same site but a different URL.

I'll get some recent stats and what not up this week... I don't own the site any longer as I gave it away so I don't have them in front of me. I should have something up by Friday though so you know where he is with it.

Also, he is doing actual link building to it as opposed to the processes I was using for a couple of reasons.

1) The site is mature enough to get some more aggressive backlinking.
2) There is a TON of content on it so being aggressive in the off site won't be an issue.
3) He has some of my resources at his disposal at no cost (he's a good friend!).

I initially read this thread a month ago and said to myself "Damn, I'd really like to build an authority site".
Fast forward to today, I've got my own authority site up, and im adding content daily. I'm not used to this workload.

Another quick thumbs up for BTB for this thread - it's been a great reference point for me over the past few months. I figured I'd add my update so that you can see how your thread has helped me.

I started my authority site on October 26th, 2014 (so it's 2 days shy of 6 months old) and now have 111 articles with around 135k words up on the site. I'm actually doing something similar to you and building this site for someone other than myself (in my case - my mum). She's not getting any younger and could do with a bit of a side income!

Domain was completely new - bought it from fresh - so the first few months were slow.

Anyway, now I'm getting about 70 uniques from Google per day. Revenue is low because initially targeted many informational keywords, rather than keywords with any real commercial intent. Starting to add more product centric posts - reviews, comparisons, charts - stuff that people look at before buying, so hoping to bolster income in next month or two.

Total costs so far are just shy of $3k, the bulk of which has gone on outsourced content. I've written around half of the content myself.

The plan is to get up to 200 posts within the 12 month mark (so 6 months from now) while setting in motion an outsourced marketing machine for the site (this is my main priority right now).

Any Tips on building out the sites authority?

I used a fresh domain. I built social profiles and am growing them daily, I've done the manual forum profiles and blog comments (on niche relevant sites) thing, a baby press release from fiverr (that is in google news), Various Web 2.0 and social bookmarks, a few misc. high authority accounts and videos, and 2 parasite pages.

The site is only 1 month old, but i'm trying to scale this puppy up.

Is it best to just be patient and focus on the content for the next few weeks?

Also, When one is building an authority site, should they be focusing on informational keywords with a few "buying" keywords sprinkled in? Or can a authority site be built using strictly "buying" keywords.

That depends on a lot of things:

1. How are you making money?
2. How difficult are the KW's to rank?
3. How many KW's are ranked?
4. How often do you add content?

If you are trying to make it with harder KWs to rank (Not Long Tail KWs) you need to get those ranked first. Adding more content will help grab and rank for some random KWs but if you are going after a 10,000 a month KW with a little competition, and you are on page 20 for it, you need some off page to rank it.

Greg goes after long tails. It is the quickest way to make money fast and get the ball rolling. Other people do different things. Assuming you are doing it like Greg, more content would be good because you are targeting KWs which will not require a lot of SEO to rank.

Yeah, I'm following Greg's Method; longtails. I only have 45 Posts and Im looking to work on the domain's authorit itself, not individual posts. I was wondering what else I could do to increase the domain's authority rather than individual pages.

A few of the stronger off site authority processes I use to build up a site are:

1) Take advantage of Press Releases - get a few of them over a period of time and link to your root page. You can use different inner page targeted KWs if you want but use the root page as the target in your PR.
2) High Metrics Web 2.0s - If you can find them, and you should be able to, add a fair amount of content to them and link to inner pages using those.
3) Parasite Pages - You'll find that some do not give you a do follow link but that is not the point of a parasite page when you are using them for SEO. There are many that will give you authority links that are pretty strong for an authority backlink profile.
4) Private Blog Network Sites - We talk about PBNs here as a way to rank sites and they are a great tool for that. But many do not talk about using them as I do for an authority site for a long term benefit. You do not need a lot of these but get a handful of domains with good metrics, turn them into 25 - 35 page sites, and link only to your one authority site from them.

You did not see me talk about that in this thread as I was trying to share how to build an authority site without spending any real money so that anyone could replicate the process but these are essential elements in my long term projects and have been for some time now.

I still owe you guys an update on the site and I'll give Richard a call today and talk a little business with him. It has been a while since we have spoken and that seems like a good enough reason to hollar at him.

If this is the case, how can you write 1500 articles or so yourself?

I am contemplating doing the same for a profitable authority site. And I can tell you that anything worth its weight in text would take at the very least 1 day per 1k article. More than likely 3 days per 1k article given the research that actually has to go into an "authority" article.

I don't have any problem writing usually; I'm on one project now though were I'm sick of the project, sick of the KWs, sick of seeing the work ahead on my daily list but this is a little different than my usual type of site and I'm seeing such nice results that I don't dare abandon it.

If you are not the type of person that can pound out 5K - 10K words on a regular basis, or even 1K a day, then you can either outsource it or use one of the available writing tools (WordAi, Articlebuilder, etc) and edit them.

I usually don't do a ton of research when I build a site because I only build them based on things that I know a little about and thus don't need a lot of research. There are times I have to research though and that is part of the gig but I don't kill myself there either. I'll get the gist of the information I need and build around it.

I'm rarely very technical in my writing, and usually don't give extreme particulars either as my goals are really just three fold:

1) Get the content ranked in Google.
2) Write something decent enough to offer value and build trust with my reader.
3) Give the reader cause to want to find out more using one of my ads.

Getting too in depth with the content will not always get me #3 and that is the most important one of the three.

NZT, that is a nootropic? Not me, I don't know there is enough research on that sort of thing to put it into my body.

I guess I have a different outlook on an authority site. I always want to make every page the "definitive guide" or whatever. Different strokes.

How are you planning to monetize these articles? Purely adsense or other cpa/cb stuff?

I use CB, CJ, Adsense, CPA, Amazon, my own products, infolinks and eBay and have been for years.

I don't use use one method to monetize my sites and I don't recommend that anyone else do most of the time. There are times that you should but the majority of times you are losing out on business if you are myopic in your cash generating processes.
