Authority Site SEO Case Study

Could you please provide some more information on how you tier your links. I know you use a custom tool, but what kind of links are you generally building (i.e. 2.0s, articles, wiki etc.).

Thanks.

Sure, the links that I tier (I don't tier all of them as I think that is not always best) are backlinked by anywhere between 1 and 40 different kinds of platforms.

I am not a believer in tiering all my links and I am not a believer in using the same platforms for them when I do tier them. We stopped that sort of thing several years ago as it is really more blackhat than white hat and I do not believe it is the best way to build a backlinking infrastructure.

Any of the links we create can be done manually, and they were before the automation was implemented, and you can get similar commercial tools that mimic what we do... they don't replicate it, they mimic it but they do a nice job in the process.

Really enjoying this BTB. Thanks for the journey.

Finished page 1. Will go through the rest tomorrow. Good stuff!

Great to see that this journey is going well for you Greg.
Its the one thread that I have on instant email notification and actually read the latest reply each time I get the email:-)

Finished reading the thread today. It was a great read.

I can't believe that I never realized that you can add information to categories! Kind of sad actually. Thank you for that.

I've always done really well with images. I think that's because I have always put a lot of time into detailed descriptions on them. What I've never done is to edit the images. I need to think about that.

My only difference with you is that you are pretty heavy into link placement. It just worries me to put this much time and money into a truly long term project and take major risks like that. As careful as you are with footprints, this must be a concern of yours as well? I know that you are an expert on the field, so I'm sure you have it covered.

I'm loving your style BTB. Looks like you have another groupie.

P.S. It's nice to know that there is at least one person here that's older than me.

Good luck, hope you will make it))

I already have, I'm doing this mainly so others can as well.

P.S. It's nice to know that there is at least one person here that's older than me.

Yeah, but I'm much more immature than you and that counts for something.

Loving this thread too... I've followed you and also am making an authority site. 1 thing that I'm also doing is I really get to know the target market/niche, and it does take me a lot of time. Then what I do now is I have a number of sites for the target market. Adding/recycling content to the sites is now much easier.

My previous goal was something like in 1 day or so, create 1 article for 5 target market. But I had some problems with that set-up - my articles were not that high quality since I had to research 5 different markets in a day or so, which is confusing and the research is really time consuming.

My set-up now is that in 1 day or so, I concentrate on 1 target market, then I write numerous high-quality articles for that 1 target market. I then also do some recycling of the knowledge/content and put it in my other websites on the same market/niche.

Anyways, thanks BTB for the inspiration and journey tracking.

Greg,

I am using a silo structure for my niche and most (but not all) of my silos are based around brands. The top level is a general description of the brand, pros, cons, benefits, history, uses, other noteworthy info and some opinion. And of course, there are links to the next level down in the hierarchy. The next level down is typically Brand "Line." For example if it was cars, it would be General Motors on top, then General Motors Trucks. Below that would be GM Silverados, then blue silverados, red silverados, half ton silverados, 4 wheel drive silverados, etc. These pages are mostly keyword driven.

A few questions:

1. Do you monetize every page or at the upper levels of the hierarchy are you just trying to establish the structure and build authority for the more specific pages below? And if you are, how would you suggest to monetize the top level pages?
2. Do you think it is beneficial or harmful to link from one silo to another if it seems appropriate in the writing? For example, when writing about a GM truck one might mention a Ford truck and link to a page in your Ford silo. Silo structure purists would say not to do that, but I know your theory is be a little bit random in one's approach.
3. Pictures - I have been following this thread since shortly after you started it but I don't recall you mentioning a good source for images. Any thoughts on images when we are dealing with branded product?
4. Love the thread. Would like to see you add some more detail on your link building.

Thanks!

One question for you regarding your domain. If you would start with a fresh domain, would you consider having one or more site for 301 purpose, redirecting to your site? and why?

Keep pushing, you're doing well

I'm really not into link placement as much as one would think; for this site in particular I have done little direct to the site although I do have a bunch of Web 2.0s prepped to unleash once I get a fair amount of content up. Maybe a total of 20 links to the whole site.

If you mean interlinking... yes, I'm a big proponent of that and probably should share some of that strategy as that is important. Give me a few days on that and I'll put something together that would make sense and is accurate as to what I do.

1. Do you monetize every page or at the upper levels of the hierarchy are you just trying to establish the structure and build authority for the more specific pages below? And if you are, how would you suggest to monetize the top level pages?

I do monetize every page... many do not have the same looking links, or even the same advertiser, but I almost never put up a page without expecting to make something off of it directly. I do like to mix up the monetization and that is a little extra work but I think it is more natural looking and certainly a better user experience.

I absolutely think it is beneficial... I know the purist disagree, and they may be right, but I have seen (relating to your example), pages that talk about Ford trucks, rank for Chevy trucks doing that on my own sites. What I do works though. I would not diss those that think otherwise, but I've seen results from how I operate.

I use Google images in the below process but also use shutterstock and istock at times when I am not feeling real parsimonious or not real happy about the Google results. To me, images are part of user experience and can help with the bounce rate so, although I am not the least bit artistic, I like to have them on 99% of the pages on my sites.

4. Love the thread. Would like to see you add some more detail on your link building.

I have not done much as to linking to the site yet but I will give a recap of what is in place in a day or so + talk about how I interlink as well. I don't have set plans as to backlinks usually as I follow this process generally so knowing what comes next is a little bit of a mystery for me.

One question for you regarding your domain. If you would start with a fresh domain, would you consider having one or more site for 301 purpose, redirecting to your site? and why?

I would consider it, and have done it on many of my sites (I actually did it this AM for an employment site I own), as well as clients, but I do not do it always. If I think the links from the 301 would aid the site, I try it out and wait a few weeks to see the results but I don't always need that kind of boost.

I have to try and test each time before keeping the 301 in place as it is not always beneficial.

@BTB

if you would own a blog with arround 800 kw's indexed but mainly in 20-100th position
how would you push them to the first page to get the traffic ?

you collecting 'em emails? If so, which platform do you use (if any)?

Vrill, if you wanted to email me that site and some of those KWs, I'd be happy to give you some specific advice.

No, I'm not doing any email marketing... just passive income... drive them to the site, give them something to read/look at, get them to click ads and hopefully make money on them.

Yesterday, $11.23 in revenue. Again, nothing I'd hang my hat on as to huge success but it is a level of success and, Success breeds success, so I expect to be making cash on this deal in the not too distant future.

Here is another thing about the site, it is targeting eBay products, as I have shared, but it is also a seasonal niche to a certain degree and starts to pick up in March/April so I am hoping to be in a pretty good position by then.

Thanks, great to see that you are starting to generate some revenue already. I do the same but with higher paying, less searched for niches (think 500$ a pop CPA), so it's hard to benchmark where I'm at with the sites.

I'm not a big user of GSA, though I've actually started using it way more lately. It seems GSA can build any link under the sun, so that's why I was wondering if there's any way to do the same tiering in GSA. Now I do manual 2.0s/blog networks, contextual + social+bookmarks to these, hit these with more contextuals, and hit all that with the kitchen sink basically. Along with hitting every tier with bookmarks, no-follow contextuals and follow contextuals. Kind of a horizontal and vertical tiering. Scrape my own lists from a bunch of platforms

My approach for this site is have built 50 Web 2.0s with NO BACKLNKS. I'll have them done for me as the content does not have to be website quality content, and let them sit while I continue my efforts.

At some point I will start to add backlinks into the articles on them but not right off as I don't think that is always the best strategy and for this site it is certainly not.

I've started to add some backlinks in to the Web 2.0s and also have started to add more articles to some of them. I'll end up with sites that have between 1 and 7 pages on them linking in once this process is done.

I will not link from each page in the Web 2.0 and all but a few will link to inner pages on the site. I'm outsourcing all that content as it is not money site content and not as important that it be engaging and a little "salesy"... it is just fodder for the search engines.

This weekend revenue was 38.28 which was not a bad little weekend for this little site. I can see this being a decent money maker once it is all built out and, although I expect sales from my eBay partner program there to die some, spring time is coming and this is really a seasonal site to a certain extent and I should gain some traction then.

Can I ask at what point do you monetize the site? Always told "wait until site is ranking".

Can I ask at what point do you monetize the site? Always told "wait until site is ranking".

Usually that is the case with me as well but I jumped the gun a little on this because it is product oriented and I wanted to get the Christmas shoppers.

I did have like 25 - 30 KWs ranking with a bunch on page 1 but not what I would typically do if I were building a site. I'd wait for more content, over 200 pages or so, and wait for more rankings.
