Does anyone here have some experience with this? I am building a huge content-based website and in addition to the informative and content-heavy pages, I'm thinking of including short little news segments/interesting facts to pull in social signals/create engagement/keep the site fresh. Will the duplicate content hurt the site SEO-wise? I'm thinking of adding my own commentary to news stories, but some of the content will still be duplicate.

You should be fine so long as you have good quality, unique content as your main attraction.

Get the quantity on there. I have just built 2 niche wp blogs using only PLR articles. Getting good traffic from Bing/Yahoo already and a few from G.
Upload half of your articles (published) then use a wordpress plugin like random post dater to randomly date the posts from 18 months back to today. Then upload the other half scheduled to post evey couple of days. Autopilot. Seems to work for me so far (2months now). You will need at least 2000 articles but if you choose a popular niche there are loads to be had.
