AT&T 3G Network and Multiple IP Addresses

Well, I'm getting the new 3G iPhone in a couple of hours and was wondering if I could use the 3G internet and full-fledged browser to my advantage. Would I be able to use it for creating accounts and such?

I can browse just about any page on the internet without a problem, but I'm concerned about the IP address.. am I assigned a new one every time I connect and disconnect?

If anyone happens to have any knowledge in this area, it'd be greatly appreciated, thanks!

you'll have one in a few hours .. to test it out iphone 2.0 is pretty cool just allows you to add more applications as i added it to my first-generation i phone today


having the 3g will be sweet i'll get the upgrade shortly but not right away
 
Well I got it this morning, just finally got it activated (servers were overloaded and went down) and I tested the 3G (which is pretty fast btw) and went to checkmyip.com, wrote down my IP which was: 32.155.122.210 and then turned the 3G, back on again, and recorded my IP again which was: 32.155.19.189.

I know this would look pretty suspicious if I started creating e*Bay acounts or something from all these IPs that start with 32.155.x.x, so I was wondering if there's any work around to this?
 
I'm surprised you are getting new IPs, I bought an at&t wireless card to do the same thing (renew ips) and they would only give me 2 different ones total (and was on the 3g network the whole time).

I think the 32.155 details your location. So they will just think there are accounts being created in the same area, not the same phone.

A bigger concern is how does the iPhone store cookies. If there is no way to delete them, then e*Bay will know right away what you are doing.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't checked more than 2 because I figured if it gave me 2 then that meant I could do it as many times as needed. I'll check and see if I get a new IP every time in a second.

And yes, you can clear cache, cookies and history :)

Just another great thing about the iPhone!
 
Would buying a sprint broadband card work for creating eBay accounts. The ip changes every time you connect to the internet and also gives you completely different ip address.
 
Brent, could yo do a test of about 10 disconnect/reconnects to be sure? I ask because:

1. I don't want to see you banned.

2. I'm actually interested in getting a smart phone, and the only thing keeping me away from the iPhone was at&t, but if you can get 10 unique ips out of 10 tries, then that should be a large enough sample of data to confirm you will get a unique everytime. If it gives you a duplicate ip even once, then more testing will be needed.

Yes, just make sure you clear your cache and cookies before you log back on to e*bay.

Disregard that IP above (75.x.x.x), that was my routers IP and I forgot I was on WiFi.

No further testing will be needed, I did it 10 times even though it was a pain in the ass. Here are my results:

32.158.76.188
32.158.159.77
32.158.173.26
32.158.226.173
32.157.202.201
32.157.132.46
32.157.177.137
32.157.133.254
32.156.137.57
32.156.197.7

According to this data, do you think I'd run into any problems down the road if I used this for creating multiple accounts and related work?

Well it looks good so far. I won't ask for something silly like "now you need a sample of 1000," but there are a few things.

1. Just because you didn't double an ip does not mean you never will. (they prob have a limited pool of dynamic ips they can issue per area (prob a few thousand)

2. Just looking at my own words "10 should be a large enough sample" make me cringe, because 10 is no where close to being a large enough sample for statistical data. I think I was just looking on one of my cpa network stats page and they have a disclaimer saying something to the tune of "all CTRs under 500,000 bear no statistical importance."

You should be fine if all you're doing is creating e*bay accounts.
 
Actually, I just looked up all of your ips..

1 was from Kansas
1 was from Sacramento
1 was from Modesto
7 were from Bay Area

Weird that a Kansas was thrown in there

I'm from San Antonio, Texas.. none of those IPs came back anywhere in Texas? Yeah, I know 10 isn't enough, and I'd never sit there and test 1000 of those, 10 was bad enough.

If I ever end up doing something with multiple IPs, I can keep a log of all the IPs I use so that I can protect myself from using a duplicate IP as well as keep a log for testing purposes.

Too bad I can't outsource this lol

Ps. Did the iPhone completely sell out everywhere? I'm NOT going on e*Bay for one.

Yep, it's sold out EVERYWHERE currently, other than eBay or craigslist. So I guess 3G sounds pretty safe to use? I'll of course still take security measures to ensure maximum protection.

If I can think of something profitable to do with all these IPs I'll log the IPs and see if everything works out and all that.
