Asking the Pros on this one...

Ok, I have a project that I am working on for someone. It is for a large niche (example: used cars or golf equipment). Instead of creating one big website that focuses on everything, I was thinking of creating 10 smaller niche websites (ex: used honda cars, used toyota cars, used ford cars, used cars, or golf balls, putters, drivers, golf accessories, etc.). Each subniche website will not have duplicate content because it will only be focusing on their own smaller niche. The main site would talk about all of them but it would not sell anything only link to the subniche websites so people can buy from the shopping carts on their individual site.

Do you think this would help to be more focused and successful in the serps?

Would you relate all them back to the main niche website but no link, like at the bottom of the homepage of each subniche site put: division of Golf website or subsidiary of Golf website?

Would you include one way links from your main niche website to all of the subniche websites but not link back or in between each subniche website?

Or do you think I should place all ten websites with ten different hosting companies, have ten different toll free numbers, use private registration for each domain and not relate any of them back to the main site?

Obviously, I just don't want to go to all of this trouble and then get banned by Google.

Just for the google ban, don't take this and run. But Google don't ban for little stuff and rarely bans. They might penalize you for some stuff you do but rarely ban. If your make doorway pages on a domain with 20 000 pages then they might do something.

For making smaller niche sites going to a main site, i don't see any problems. Your not doing anything wrong by doing that. Unless someone can say other wise.

Thanks for your input. On a side note. I was looking at a few sites on my blackberry yesterday and notices content that I had not seen on this site before. So, when I got come home and to my computer I looked up the site again but the content wasn't there. Are they cloaking or hiding the content some how? What your thoughts?
