I’m thinking of trying affiliate marketing, but I’m nervous I’ll fail.

I don’t have much time (maybe 30 minutes a day), and I don’t know how to choose good offers or traffic sources.

For those of you who started from scratch, is it realistic to earn $50 in my first month? Or should I set a different goal?

Any advice on where to start?

Totally understand where you're coming from. It’s possible to make $50 in your first month if you stay focused and keep learning.
Pick one traffic source and one-two solid offer — keep it simple.

At first you need to avoid nervousness.
You will get here on BHW many tips about Affiliate marketing. Search and read about it and jump to start work.
focus on one niche and learn low-cost traffic like organic social or forums first. building momentum takes time. Keep it consistent!

This statement is where the buck stops for me. Until you get the fear of failing out of your head, you will NEVER succeed. You will forever stay stuck asking questions and never getting started. Failure is going to happen. If you never fail, you never did anything worth trying. Failing isn't a bad thing and shouldn't be something you avoid. Run towards failure because it is your teacher.

For the people i've known, some took years but some took only days to generate their first revenue. The point is depends on your mindset and tools. If you already have your inventory (websites, ads operations, traffic source, etc) then its a great start for you. But for "totally new" kind of beginner, just keep in mind that its a part of the process, dont afraid failure and keep going and someday everything will paid off
