Hey all,

I had a fair success in the past, ranking high for low competition keyword (most were short-lived trending keyword) by pointing all the links to homepage. But for moderate keyword with constant search volume, I found it hard to win the top 10 spot with all the backlinks directed to homepage. I also needed to build links to the particular innerpage I want to rank for.

Recently, though, one of my most profitable money page got kicked to page 3 on the SERP. It has half the number of backlinks to the site's homepage.

When I checked the competition, none of the ranking page has more than 10 backlinks, but their homepage got huge deal of backlinks. I also do research for some random keywords, and the result is similar, more or less.

L: backlinks to that particular page
LD: Backlinks for www and the non-www version of the homepage

So, I want to ask you all. Which do you think is more effective to get a high ranking in a SERP, Pointing the backlinks to your homepage or innerpage?

Take a look at any bigger site that has gotten its backlinks naturally. You will see that majority of backlinks point to homepage. I always build 60 - 80% of my links to homepage. It looks natural and in the end, it doesn't even matter (pun intended) where you point them, if you your onsite SEO is done well. With good interlinking, your juice will flow through your entire site, no matter where you point the backlinks.

You can point the rest of the backlinks to the inner pages that need ranking. :)

Thank you for your reply. I definitely have to try it for next project.

I read in a local forum, a post from someone who seems to know a lot about SEO. It said to point the backlinks to the page we want to rank, not necessarily the homepage.

The result was good, I was in top 10, until a few days ago when I found out the traffic had dropped considerably. Turns out, my page got kicked to 20-something.

There are plenty of posts on this forum from "someones" who "seem to know a lot about SEO". :)
