ASK: about domain transfer noob question

Hi guys,

I'm new in this forum as well as new about domain and website building.
and wondering let say If I registered a domain in godaddy say for 10 years
but then after 3 years I'm s3lling the domain to some guy. And that guy isn't using godaddy as their domain registrar but he's using namecheap instead.
I'm wondering when I transfer the domain that is supposed to have 7 years lifetime still without needed to renewing it, when I transfer it to that guy's namecheap account, will the guy needs to renew the domain instead? and the 7 years lifetime would be gone? as it is registered by different person in the first place?

EDIT: phew... so hard to pass the trigger word by mods... mfg: I had to look what I wrote words by words and find out which has triggered the mods

The domain registration period follows the domain and not the owner. In other words there would be 7 years left for the new owner but to do a transfer he'd still have to pay another year renewal most likely. That's a requirement for most registrars regardless of when how much time is still left on the domain.

My recommendation if you sold the site is to have the new buyer create a free GD account and do a push to him. Let him acquire the 7 years remanding and let it be his problem when he wants to transfer to another registrar.

thank you so much for your crystal explanation.
but if I do the transfer right away (meaning: not asking him to make the free GD account sothat I can use the 'push' feature in GD), the 'another year renewal fee' will still be the new owner obligation in his namecheap register,
and same with if he made the new free GD account, of course when I pushed him the domain, both (me and him) are free of charge. But then we he wants to transfer it from his GD account to namecheap, he will then be responsible for "another year renewal"
so both ways the "another year renewal" will be the domain buyer's responsibility. Am I correct?

And also if I transfer domain from (let's say from A registrar to other B registrar), and in fact A registrar has some TOS that I don't like too much, will this means my domain will be freed from the A registrar's TOS as soon as I transferred it to B registrar? or will the TOS from A registrar will still applies since I bought it from A registrar from the first place for 10 years registration period, and need to wait until the that 10 years passes will then I will be completely free from that A registrar's TOS?

Domain name rules are set by ICANN and all registrars follow the same basic set of rules. When you registered your domain, you were under ICANN rules, not that registrar's rules, the domain name age and duration of your registration are set by ICANN and must be honored by all accreditted registrars.

thanks for your response, please correct me if I got this wrong:
so you are saying, having domain registered in GD is OK (even when they supporting SOPA) as long as I don't use their webhosting service? As the domain won't be effected even with GD supporting SOPA whereas the domain is not under GD's but under ICANN's rule same as namecheap, hover, and any other registrar does?

What does SOPA have to do with anything? I don't think I understand your question. I do not use godaddy at all. IMO namecheap is a good registrar, hosting companies can be found by the bunches.

I'm just quite dont get it while lots of people complaining when GD starts to support SOPA and saying that it may effect to their domains that being registered at GD in the first place.

While I'm trying to understand more about this whole thing a bit more, when Domain is actually under ICANN and not registrar's rule, would that also mean that even GD cannot revoke my domain if I somehow accidentally violate SOPA terms, as GD has no rights whatsoever to do anything to my domain?

What they probably meant by "affecting domains registered at GD" is that less people will choose GD as their registrar (They were talking about how it would affect GD's sales, not GD's customers).

Also, GD no longer supports SOPA...
