If you're a newbie in SEO, you have to focus first on finding the right niche and posting quality content for more website traffics. However, if you want to jump on backlinks, there's nothing wrong about it. These links have a significant impact on a website ranking. However, you should focus on quality links instead of quantity.

I agree. Since you’re still a newbie, there are so many other things you need to cover besides backlinks. If possible, try to acquire backlinks and work on other SEO practices at the same time. Of course, just leaving your links all over the forums won’t be of much help. You must make them natural and leave valuable posts. Also, as ContentWriter has said, focus on quality rather than quantity.

IF your title is Digital Marketing Consultant and your website url is selling / promoting courses? Shouldn't you know the answer...

After reading through a fair bit on here, I think your focus should be split on on-page and off-page.
on-page: creating blog content, make sure page is quick on both desktop and mobile, fix all 404 errors, etc.
off-page: build links, guest posting is easiest way to start.
