Artificial Intelligence will take over the world!

Okay so I'll start this off by saying I have been hearing a lot of scary things.

First I heard a story of the army experimenting with AI in combat robots, the result being 2 robots being shut down and the last hacking there system and upgrading itself (in the process eliminating over 5 soldiers) idk how true this is but I hope it isnt.

Secondly I have seen Elon Musk mentioning the danger of AI multiple times and saying that we are progressing too fast and that we will lose control completly.

Now my question for all of your nerds is, how do you think this will play out? Have you heard any other stories or have any theories on what will happen in the future regarding AI?

We don't have a good history of predicting these things. With every single technology there were people claiming it was too dangerous and would destroy the world. AI upgrading itself? Give me a break. AI isn't actual intelligence of any kind. It's simply a prediction model. It predicts things based on probability. You can very easily create your own AI at home. There's nothing special about it. You can train a bot to recognize what is a yellow cat. You will feed it pictures of thousands of cats, and it will learn to recognize what a yellow cat is. What Openai does is the same but on a much larger scale. It doesn't actually have original thoughts. It doesn't have will. It doesn't have desires. It simply predicts things. Besides, nobody will create a bot with access to critical infrastructure and permissions to upgrade anything other than what we want it to upgrade.

So you believe they are all just conspiracy theories? And also what do you think Elon is talking about all the time?

Elon is a nerd. He watched too many sci-fi movies and has wet dreams about these things. He and people like him just like to fantasize about these scenarios. We're nowhere near the point where what we call "AI" could revolt against us and cause any sort of harm. Maybe that day could come, but for now it's just hype. This cannot do anything it is not allowed to do. It can't even talk about certain topics.

You are definitely right about AI as it is today, it cannot do anything we don't want it to. However the concern of Musk and many others is a technology which does not yet exist (AGI - artificial general intelligence). This would be a level of AI in which the robot brain can operate and have individual thoughts in the same way as a human brain, but on a much, much higher level. Don't think of chatGPT as even being close to true intelligence; it is child's play compared to what the potential of AI is.

Some people like Elon think this super intelligence will be here in just a few years, some think it will take decades, and some think it will never happen. However, I wouldn't be so quick to discredit Elon if i was you. He probably understands AI better than 99% of people on earth, and he was one of the founders of openAI.
