this sounds interesting... :cow04:

Get ready for the first huge Facebook Slap.

There's a whole bunch of software doing the rounds at the moment which allow you to scrape Facebook groups and Facebook pages to build lists to market to.

Sounds awesome! Let's do the smell test.

Did you get the permission from the person whose identity you just scraped to send them information?

When this inevitably hits the New York Times as a huge privacy issue for Facebook.
Do you think Facebook will be thrilled?

Are you building something of value? Something you would be proud to tell your family about and appear on television about?

I know this will make people angry, but for my readers, losing your Facebook account will be even more devastating than losing your Google account.

At the end of the day losing your Google account was a very private annoyance.
When you can't join your child's swimming groups Facebook group, that's embarrassing.

I'm sure you could pretend you're a Facebook privacy hipster and say you haven't joined Facebook because of the lack of privacy...

That would be highly ironic.

Look, it's true.

People are making money hand over fist.

They are leaving a footprint.

They will get slapped.

They will get tossed of Facebook.

You can make money for now exploiting the arbitrage and be out of business by Halloween...

Or you can build a business the old fashioned way.

Make stuff people love and provide information that delights. People will love to join your tribe and tell others to join too.

Facebook has stacks of totally legit awesome ways to market ? why cut yourself off from that.

Mark my words, the first major Facebook slap is coming. I'd hate any of my readers to be caught up in it.

Ed

P.S.In researching this article, I discovered some of the people who are selling the software have already been banned from Facebook...

I think it was Ed dale who first talked about the Google Slap,
so his prediction of a FB slap seems to be well founded.
Thanks for highlighting it OP

Everyone is trying to rip into facebook to find any way to use it. I've gotten PM's from things I couldn't believe. It's good for marketing but can annoy the heck out of you if you want to use it for social real stuff. I think it may end up spam central before the next big thing comes out. There will always be another new site everyones screaming about.

Why the hell would you ever use your personal facebook account when doing black hat stuff? Aren't proxies and throw away accounts part of the "facebook scraping 101" course?

some people miss the bus, and then it hits them!
and they cry "foul!"

The 'Facebook Slap' has already happened. They are forcing owners of Facebook Pages to pay for advertising to reach any of the users they worked so hard to 'like' their pages.

Also, Facebook ALLOWS you to target ads to certain users. Because they ALLOW marketers to do so, it will be written in their TOS which all users have to agree to upon joining, so therefore they wouldn't disable your account as you are only using the tools they provide. No one is going to care if it for some reason gets 'leaked'. You've always been able to target via location, likes, interests etc + FB UID's are open to the public.

Like elschlongo said - if you're using your legit fb account to do blackhat shit, you're an idiot. This guy Ed Dale sounds like he's talking too much about a topic he doesn't know enough about.

I bought a lot of software, have one of the most deadly problem, Facebook is oftenlocked account,

Facebook practices shutting down accounts or forcing page owners to pay for displaying content to users, but this is too smooth. I wonder if there will be a real big harsh slap.

one thing i've learned about the internet is to never rest on your laurels.
google, facebook, adsense, et al will always do something to wreck your income.

Sounds like a fucking idiot who doesn't know what he is talking about. People don't care about their privacy. Otherwise why would 30% of facebook users leave their profiles public? And many others not caring. Secondly, if information can be scraped by a bot it is PUBLIC domain. It means you can extract it and use it for whatever marketing purpose you want.

This moron author needs a new job. I thought this was gonna talk about the declining facebook reach. Not this.

ha! shows how the right word can get the public to read your articles. the funny thing is that most people don't know what "apocalypse" really means.

I bought a lot of software, no one can avoid Facebook robot audit, for the software very disappointed

You are saying something.. correct, but people don't mind to these things & nowadays an fb page is far better than a Website. On the other hand, there are many loopholes(:p) which are currently used widely for marketing purpose
