I have a question: what is better for SEO? Put an article online as quickly as possible and then expand it continuously (first 500 words, then adding 1,000, then adding again 500.. and so on).

Or invest more time in the article, the article needs longer to get online. And it appears online with 1.500 - 2.000 words..

gets Google this? if an article has been edited and new text has been added?

Editing an article over time is always a good idea. Refreshing the content, adding more text to it or editing the existing one makes sure the bot is reindexing it from time to time. The more Google is crawling your website, the better.

In most of the cases, the more words your article have, the better. Especially for informative texts, how-to, etc... with more words you will assure that you will get better positions especially for long tails.

I've done a few experiments and have found that articles with too many words are not always ok. For example if you are trying to rank for a money keyword like "buy xxx" and the cometition in your niche have an average length of 100 words, if you write a 10,000 words article will be considered as a negative signal sometimes.

But these are rare cases. In most of the time - more words = higher position and more traffic. And yes, keep updating your articles from time to time to make the content fresh. I am trying to add more text to my top pages every couple of months and it works great :)
