Maybe it makes me dumb but I always prefer making my own mistakes and seeing the truth for myself. To the point where, even if someone had been there and made that mistake, I’d likely still go ahead with it just to know myself what the outcome would be.
I feel like I can learn a lot more from making my own mistakes than I can from just trusting what others have been through but more importantly, I often find that the reality of anything is very different from the reality of it as perceived by others.
A good example; my wife says to me whatever you do Dave, don’t go out driving in this snow, our car is two wheel drive, according to the ratings it doesn’t handle well at all in the snow, you’ll probably crash, or get stuck.
What do I do? I go out in the snow because a) I want to learn for myself if the car really is bad in the snow, or if people have just said it is and everyone took that for granted and b) it’s fun. I go out and guess what; it’s great fun, I don’t crash and a realise that although it’s not as good as a 4-wheel drive, for example, it does handle relatively well in the snow if you drive carefully.
