Well, the thread title has the question. I'm very new to backlinking (the whole SEO) and I'm thinking of building backlinks on Yahoo Answers myself for my site.

It's effective for driving traffic. All links from Yahoo answers are no-follow. It's another nice addition to diversifying your link profile.

Posts on yahoo answers are intended for traffic, but if you know how to aggregate them, auto forums and blogs will scrape the posts and if they have a do follow attribute you will indirectly benefit from them.

The great thing is that they lead to a snowball effect when sites not only scrape from yahoo but the sites that scraped yahoo as well and continuing over time.

After analyzing links over a period of time I end up with more sites that scraped the posts than I made on yahoo which is great for immediate traffic as well as natural backlinks occurring over a period of time and additional traffic from the auto sites.

My links are live in each auto site which is great because I can keep the link juice and traffic forever.

Setup redirects and you can change them to whatever network you desire if shaving is occurring.

The yahoo accounts credibility ends up helping as well because the posts appear more often in the yahoo answer searches which results in more opportunities for scrapers to pick up your post.

Some scrapers only take the best answers but a lot of them also take some of the other one's too.

That isn't a problem as I get best answer 95% of the time ;).

Exactly.. and there are several high pr autoblogs that works based on yahoo answers, so eventually you will get more backlinks, even if you don't get seo value, yahoo answers provide very targeted traffic, and are good with conversions.

I've always had trouble getting them to stick (LOL, I oversell)... But when they do, it's definitely worth it fo' shu...

As with the others said... Yahoo answers is good for traffic and not effective for link building.

All right, got it. Isn't that good for SEO but it is for traffic. What do you think is best for Yahoo Answers then? An Adsense site? CB product promotion site? CPA site?

All of those work good, it's just a matter of picking one and sticking to it without giving up.

Yep, everything that everybody said above is true - while the links are no-follow, there are tons of indirect SEO benefits that come with it. Plus, your main point is to drive in traffic...sorry...I should rephrase..TARGETED TRAFFIC. If you make sales, your SEO factor won't be so much of a thought. That's why Answer Swipe was created :) Check it out in my signature or go to my BST thread..it's discounted for BHW members.

Always love it when ppl write about Yahoo Answers ;)

Theoretically, Yahoo answer is very good, but in practice, it is not that easy; at least my experience tells me that.

Would everyone quit freaking out about no*****w? You need them for your link diversity, so they are good for SEO. They put your site in front of people, increasing the possibilities that someone will share a link, also good for SEO. They drive traffic, also good for SEO.

You are wasting your time worrying about the NF attribute.

Yahoo is great because it is so simple:

Use a Gmail account for alerts only, set up a Google alert for
site:answers.yahoo.com YOUR KEYWORD,
and set it for all incidents and as it happens. (if you get lot of junk, reset it to send only the better alerts.)

When you get an alert you can answer, go answer it, then copy and paste your answer in a spread sheet. do this for all your keywords you have alerts for. Leave your link in the body OR the source box, not both. In time you will build up a standard set of answers to use for the questions, and answering will simply require picking the most appropriate answer from your spreadsheet and pasting it in, then tweaking it. Try to answer as fast as possible to get your answer seen by more people, and when they are stuck in voting, go vote for yourself as best answer. Best answer is always listed first and 1 vote can often get it for you.

Be sure to use http:// with your links, and I don't link directly to my affiliate pages, I go thru a redirect page from one of my web sites.

When you can, take the "it happened to me and this is what I did" approach with affiliate traffic, and a "here is where you can find that info" with website traffic.

Like others said Yahoo is awesome for referral traffic. All though the link juice form yahoo itself might not be good since its nofollow there still lots of benefits. A lot of times when someone finds an answer on yahoo they copy the answer + link and post it on another website.

any working bots for yahoo answers? it seems the ones on the BST section don't work (judging by the reviews).

Yahoo answers will get you that referral traffic but not sure about backlinks. Google will probably consider them spammy links/low quality and they may also be nofollow. I rather just get blogroll links on content relevant websites, engage in link exchanges and write articles.
