Are VA's responsible for costs incurred caused by them?

Hi, I am researching a project and plan to hire some virtual assistants to help me within the next couple of months. My project involves booking reservations, deadlines, and time sensitive work. In the event that I had a VA whose error resulted in unexpected costs would they be responsible?

Say a VA is responsible for booking reservations, and said VA mistakenly books the wrong date or time (the money cannot be recovered) would I have to eat the expense, is the expense shared, are they immune to paying for costs caused by their failure?

Perhaps it varies agency to agency but if anyone has experience with this topic or has dealt with the issue before I'd love to hear from you.

that depends upon many factors. The best thing is to make an agreement with the VAs from the very beginning.
If you pay them a few hundred dollars a month, you cannot expect them to pay anything from their own pocket.

Good luck getting va to pay up for any mistake. They'll likely block you and move on to the next assistant gig.
Unless you have stuff in contracts and they're in USA, it would be like pulling blood from a stone. Perhaps you could garnish their wages until they work back what they made you lose, but what if your worker blocks you and moves on? I would end their job contract and beef up the screening process when I hire the next assistant.

Giving the line of work you would have them done, if they make a mistake it would really affect their earnings for quite some time making them work for free for days.
On the long run, it won't work.

So the best way is to avoid it is by establishing some steps / protocol which make them double, triple check.
