Instead of uploading images to my hosting account, I've been inserting image links to other sites. For example if I need to insert a photo of Barack Obama I would just pull it from a newspaper's website.

Will the other sites find out and/or even care?

Why not just download the image and then upload it to tinypic.com and then use the link they give you. I can't speak for the legality of hotlinking to an image that is on another site, but I can tell you that they can easily see that you are doing it by checking their stats. And finally, you are always subject to getting into hot water by the unathorized use of anyone's images. If you want to take the risk then be prepared to pay the consequences.

Plus if the image, for some reason, is deleted or goes down, then it will not show up on your website as well. I suggest getting it hosted free in one of the many such sites available instead

Yes, it is very easy to trace hotlinked images and also very easy to block it from happening.

It's also easy to set up a site so it shows goatse or something similar to anyone who views the pic from an unauthorized referrer.

Most sites will switch for an ad or a box that says something like "unauthorized hotlinking prohibited." The catch is that if you hotlink, you never know when you'll find someone who leaves you with a more...striking...message.
