Are themes and plugins from GPL sites safe to use?

Has anyone used wordpress themes or plugins from sites like https://totalgpl.com?

I have bought plugins like smush pro and yoast pro from them.Can't say on the themes but the plugins work great and are very cheap.

If guess if they're charging you money, the risk of a plugin having malicious code gets minimized, but the risk will always be there unless you buy it directly from the developers.

I guess you are right. I would buy it from the developers but just can't afford it at the minute

Try to install Wordfence plugin, it's free. It can help you find malicious code (works in most cases).
If you find something suspicious, try to disable plugins one at a time to see if the issue is solved. If it is then that particular plugin is problematic.
Likewise, try to switch to the default WordPress theme. If the issue is solved then the theme you have currently installed is problematic.
