A lot of people blame shadow bans when engagement drops. But are platforms actually limiting reach secretly, or is it just algorithm shifts and weaker content performance? Curious what real evidence or tests people have done

sometimes people post the exact content on multiple accounts on one platform and it performs different.

Shadowbans are real, but most “shadowban” cases are just reach drops caused by risk signals or weaker engagement.
If visibility suddenly collapses across good content and non-followers can’t see posts/comments, that’s likely a flag — not just bad content.

Most of the time when engagement drops, it’s not a secret “shadow ban.” Platforms don’t quietly limit reach reach changes are usually due to algorithm shifts, audience behavior, or content performance. If posts aren’t resonating or users aren’t engaging quickly, reach naturally falls.

Most engagement drops aren’t due to “shadow bans.” Platforms don’t secretly limit reach what usually happens is algorithm changes, content not resonating as well, or audience behavior shifts. People test this by comparing impressions vs engagement over time, trying different formats, and tracking performance after algorithm updates. Real drops in reach almost always link back to relevance signals, not hidden bans.

Shadowbans are real, can be cause by suspicious activity/ flagged IP/ flagged device

The point about risk signals and weaker engagement is correct but I've found that sudden drops in visibility are often preceded by a surge in user reports or spam flags, which can trigger a temporary or even permanent reduction in reach. Tested this on a dozen accounts last year, and in 8 cases, a significant increase in user reports correlated with a subsequent drop in engagement and reach, even when content quality and audience behavior remained consistent. One account in particular saw a 75% drop in reach within 48 hours of a spike in user reports, and it took 6 weeks to recover.

It's probably because the accounts are new and getting shadow bans as you've stated as well. Stable accounts get banned with more difficulty, so if you see 1 underperforming then it's probably an algorithm chagne.
