Are profile backlinks worth anything?

A lot of people seem to recommend making accounts on high-pr forums and web 2.0s and then adding your URL to the public profile page. There are tons of do-follow sites that have a domain of PR7+, but the profile pages only show PR0. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how these links would be more powerful than a regular blog post.

Has anyone found these to be effective?

Thanks.

The profile page will always be 0. I build a dirty list of 100k links and blast an old site I dont care about. Once I have the cleaned list I use that for a moderate rate of link building for my one month old pages.
What I have noticed is that a LINK is a LINK. All links are useful. The BS site has only improved and not dropped for any keywords. Just the occasional 3-4 day dance. I decided to do this as an experiment to see for myself since there are very vocal advocates on both sides of the fence. So far it is full of win.

All links are useful.all u have to do is to index those profiles.

You can get some good SERP if you can build profiles on tons of do follow PR 7+ sites, provided that your all profiled been indexed by the search engines :) .

Oh yeah, you can still rank with profiles. It's totally doable. I've ranked a strong site with just a few hundred profiles in a single blast run through Linklicious. Weak sites or new ones can take time and other higher quality links.

Profile links are still valuable because they are links at the end of the day, imagine how many people put facebook etc. as their homepage, they are still indicators of popularity and authority but in different ways from the single high PR contextual link. It would be sort of nazi of Google to just ignore or even penalize them. Most of the general public do not build profile links, just the small number of BH SEO people.

i still cant figure out if all that high pr urls from forums is all BS.
like AandP's backlinks from hi pr forums.
i just dont see how a profile link with a pr0 is going to pass
any of the forums pr9 to you at all.
i mean i could be wrong but i just dont see it.
Adobe is the most popular i think. yeah, its a pr9 but
your profile page is a ZERO.

a link is always good but are you getting anymore pr ??
i just dont think so
