Are niche sites still a thing?

I remember that a couple of years niche sites were the big hype.

Are they still a thing?

Or is it better to focus on bigger projects?

Of course, it's still a thing, but competition goes crazy every day, so you have to calculate what to do as your next move.
 
I was planning to start some niche sites on related expired domains.

So starting a survival site on an expired domain related to survival.
 
Yes they are and you wanna try building authority in that niche.

Yes or no. It's better to start a multi-niche site, that can be a catch-all for various types of niches. The name of the game it's keyword research in my opinion, as it's better to target low-comp keywords from various but related niches under one authority site with a high DA. This is help you rank faster.

Yes, it's very much a thing. The competition is crazy. It's not for the faint hearted. If you know what you doing and plan your way through the boring months, you'll get there!

I usually work in the finance niche, but getting bored of it.

So niche sites got me excited. As mentioned earlier the idea would be:

- Buy an expired domain at auction related to a niche.. Lets say cycling.
- I set up the website using categories... So:
> Cyclingnichewebsite.com/category/tyres
> Cyclingnichewebsite.com/category/clothing

And so on...

In these categories I then start writing articles such as:

Cyclingnichewebsite.com/the-best-square-tyres
Cyclingnichewebsite.com/the-best-glass-helmets

So the Category page would target the main keyword which is pretty much impossible to rank for. The articles would then target the long tail keywords.

The articles would be a mix of informational and money making articles both targeting long tail low competition keywords.
 
no, better focus on hyper generic stuff, like literally talk about everything, randomly, no logic, no structure.
 
It's still lucrative
Advertisers for display ads are bidding higher each year

That's a tough niche, but considering that you are experienced and using expired domains, you most likely get a piece of the pie if targeting easy to rank long tails.
 
Got a handful number of sites earning me some nice little passive income for as long as I can remember now upto you
 
Definitely still a thing - in fact, I don't think niche sites will ever die out.

They definitely can be, but it also depends on which niche we are talking about. Some of them have a higher level of competitiveness, some not, but you could succeed in either way if you have a quality product and a strategy that can help you determine your online activities. With niche based site you will know easier which audience to target and you won't wander around trying to find the best fit for your offer.
