Are MNS still viable ?

For some time now I've been thinking about setting up some small online properties for myself. I'm not looking for something to live off of, but something to maybe bring in some extra cash for when times get hard. Normally I would rather go for a long term project, but I have a very time-consuming job (I'm a translator, though I mostly freelance), and I don't think I could muster either the time or the energy necessary to invest in something big. I have a decent grasp on kw research as many of my clients are IMers and require me to target specific kws in the translated text.

Hence, I have some questions for those of you who, ideally, own a couple MNS sites built around a specific CB/Amazon product or something similar that I can work on when I have no contracts.

1] How do you get traffic to a MNS ? Does it require a strong off-site SEO ?
2] In your experience, is it better to go with a cheap product which is 'in demand', or is it more profitable to get one big sale every few weeks/months ?
3] Would it be possible to only purchase a domain name and use some free hosting to cut down expenses ?
4] Is there any other monetization option other than CB/Amazon that would be worth looking into ?

A big thank you to anyone who actually takes the time to read this post and respond. I want to make sweet sweet love with you.
