i read an article online stating that micro niche sites are dead/aren't as good as they used to be.
is this the truth?

They're not dead at all. As long as you've got a good kw, and you know how to rank a site properly, all is good.

Of course are not as was back in 2006, lets say, but! if you keep it Clean, Original and Safe, you are good to go.

If you EVER hear about Panda, Penguin etc... this Updates from Google, killed thousands of Money Making Machines... and MOST of those sites were CRAP. As long as you invest in Good Content, and Right SEO, you making money.

follow up question, is it worth paying someone to seo for you as a beginner?

also, is there a better alternative to MNS?

Nope, they are not dead. Its been years since I am hearing this is dead or that is dead. Do not trust anything you read online unless you test it yourself.

no they're not dead. are they typically harder to do well in than say 10 yrs ago? of course. the real opportunities lie in budding niches where keywords are being discovered.

Depends On Keywords And Content !!

Nothing Is Dead..

I think the better question is...

Among the handful of MNS sellers in BHW, are there any good ones which can deliver sites that have real potential of making money?

Again, if it was so easy, everyone would be doing it. That's the reason why people think it's "dead"... It's cause ranking MNS are not as easy as before. But if you get a good site and you rank it the right way, you will see results.

This is something I personally want to revisit again sometime this year. I had a few failed MNS ventures a few years ago. It will be nice to see if I can profit this time around.
