Are meta tags important?

meta keywords: debatable, highly likely that it's not needed but I put it in anyway
meta description: yes, used as your serp snippet sometimes and the desc in Google+
content-type: yes, you're supposed to put it in there for html validation
robots (nofollow, noarchive etc): yes, if you want to do those things with your page
everything else: forget about it

They are basis of the SEO and though Google has reduced its importance I would suggest you to provide meta info for your posts and blogs

Here is a test I made few weeks ago on blogspot.
3 blogspots made. One with no meta, one with meta and one on which I added meta after 2 weeks.
The one with no meta = no index even after 3 posts and 2 weeks past.
The one that had meta from the begining got indexed and ranked in top 100 on a small niche, in about 5-7days.
The one with meta added after 2 weeks, got ranked in top 100 after 2 days from the day I added meta.
No backlinks were made on them.

The meta keywords tag is ignored by Google per their help docs.

Meta tags are really important for any site or blog. Work properly in placing targeted keywords per page so that you can ranking in SERP's.
