you need 463278642376/436468326874632*432432678643 backlinks. in honesty, no one knows. enough to be at par with your direct competition. so every niche is different.
if you have access to ahref, majestic or even free semrush, do a bit research across different niches, and you will notice that number 1 position does NOT always has the most number of links. it probably has the most number of powerful links, which is hard to tell by me and you.
lastly, backlinks play a much smaller role these days vs few years ago. you need to focus more on on-page optimization, site speed and creating content that matches users intention. the outline of your content for "buying cheapest laptop" is different from from "how to make your laptop faster".

There is no such thing as "enough" links. Even when you outrank all your competition, you still need to build links to maintain your rankings. Now if you stop at the top, there will be others who will outrank you ...
Of course, you shouldn't build millions of links because it' always quality over quantity but you also need constantly work on it.

Quality is what it matters in backlinks.. If the quality is good.. Having more no of such backlinks would be really helpful in improving your site's metrics.
