Hello bhw i have an adult site and i like to optimaze it for seo i have done some on page seo but nothing professional , mostly with plugins. so i am asking if i should just go ahead and buy some link building service for my site or should ifocus more on the on page optimization ?

Not much point doing off page until your on page is good.

Social signals etc aren't a problem, just depends on how adult you're talking about though.
 
On-page is crucial.
 
everything is important, on-page as well, make sure to have quality backlinks only.
 
On-page that invloves website pages, titles, tags, content and overall structure are optimized for your target keywords,and make sure before trying to build links look for exact niche that relevant to your site and content is most important try to use unique articles and choose spam free sites for posting.
 
At first test your on page score with the help of free or premium tools then fix the issues. Next, start focus on building links try to get links from niche relevant sites.

Agree, backlinks should be from relevant web sites and surrounded with content. Don't build many backlinks at once, otherwise they will look suspicious to Google.
 
First of all, work on your On-Page SEO, Mobile SEO, Responsive Design i..e check your SEO Score and Website Speed Score.

Once done, follow Diversify Links Strategy:

Unique web2.0 descriptions
Unique blogs with word count 800-1200 and submissions
Edu Links
Tier 2 submissions
Profile Links
Social Media - High DA submissions
High DA Blogs Submissions and so on.

Hope that works for your adult website.

You can focus on On-Page SEO at start. Keep updating your site with high-quality articles, target low competitive long tail keywords and then start building links. Build quality links to your site.

Focus 100% first your on page optimization very clear with attractive design and then start your off page link building works.

Defiantly make the site look appealing after 20 years on the internet I can determine the legitimacy of a website within .5 seconds :)
 
Sometimes links is enough. Sometimes content is enough.

But if the niche is competitive, which pr0n is, you're going to need to do both well.
 
You should more focus on page optimization and then off page optimization.
 
It all depends. Backlinks help a great deal, but it works better if everything else is on point. Make sure there are no 404 errors. And everything on your site functions right. That it is compatibale for mobile and desktop.

A good option is to great your own pbn. I've had great results with it
