If you use a theme with basically the menu and image (no content) on the main page, is your on-page seo gone?

Can you still get good rankings even if you don't have a whole lot going on in the main page besides image alt descriptions and main title?

On page SEO is below par chances are you'll end up not ranking well despite you build many backlinks.

Depends on your niche. I've had some clients who were wedding photographers with flash sites that had no text content whatsoever and I've pushed them to #1 for "<city> wedding photographer" queries. But that's relatively uncompetitive (~3000-6000 searches, 300ish competitors, most of which are not SEO-savvy)

So even if the blog has a ton of content pointing to the main page, it would still not help much?

thanks

I personally have a friend who owns about 4-5 image based sites (obviously, they contain celebrity photos and so on).He gets about 7500 views per day, and earns only from them around $150/month. However, he writes unique descriptions for each photo in part, fact that takes some time, but according to him, it's quite worthy, once you can manage with a long boring work.

It totally depends on you niche. If your competitors have articles on their homepage they will get extra point for onpage seo.
