Are Google Maps Citations safe (risk-free)? And do they really help ranking?

Hi Blackhatters,

I just want to stay and in the white had SEO zone.
Therefore, I am asking if Google Map Citations (around 400-500) are safe and do not cause a ranking drop, or even worse, a penalty?
What are your experiences with them?

NOTHING ever is white hat if the number raises from 0 to 500 and then goes back to 0 really fast. Drip feed them at least.
