yes forums are still worth the time. I have even got conversions from forum. More automotive forum we focused according to their niche and we got traffic + conversions

Direct Referral Traffic and brand trust? Yes absolutely and especially when you considers how aggressively google is now promotingg community discussions within the SERPs.
As far as pure link juice goes no, since most of the links will be no follow anyway and thus will not affect your rankings in any way.
