Are Expression Engine forum profiles any good?

They are pretty much same as other type of profile backlinks.

Backlinks from Expression Engine profile is not indexed as much as any other types of backlink. I tried that with hundreds of EE sites, only a few indexed by Google. I'll let you know later if this change

This is true and profile links do not seem to have been devalued in general. They do help though if you change the way you do them a bit. Instead of just sticking some bare links in your profile use all the allowed words you can and bury the link in some related text. You are automating it anyway so it while it does take a little more work to setup they are not really any harder to do. Set your self up a nice long profile, spin it and let it go. Then you can backlink them a bit and they will do much better than bare links.
