Out-of-the-box WordPress installs come with basic settings most people never touch.
Have you seen noticeable improvements from tweaking defaults like permalinks, reading settings, or discussion options?

Yes, use a seo optimized theme like wpastra or generate press.
Example show page update instead of pusbish date. Remove number of comments and add category.
Some site you may want to remove comments all together if no real comments are getting generated.
Most of it depends on the site and how it's performing.
 
yeah changing permalinks and reading settings helped me a lot. default comments and pagespeed stuff is slow. small tweaks can make your blog feel faster and cleaner

yes, the default wordpress settings alone, i dont think might not hold your, i have seen blogs that ranked well with thoses settings. But for me to really get the main push and also to avoid future headaches. i believe every new blog needs to be well optimized from the start

Yes to some extend I change the permalink structure since the existing or the defauld one is like good for traditional blogs, Reading is okay for me for the discussion I always keep it in the moderations since there are lots of spamming options there.

Yes — and it’s not just a “minor improvement.” Some default WordPress settings, when optimized early, can make a noticeable difference in SEO, user experience, and admin performance. That said, there are also settings that you can pretty much leave untouched.

Permalinks is the obvious one - default "?p=123" URLs are terrible, switch to /%postname%/ immediately on a new site. Don't change this on an existing site with traffic unless you set up proper redirects, that mistake has killed rankings for a lot of people.
The one that actually surprised me - comments being on by default. Every post accumulates spam comments that Google crawls, and if your comment moderation is off you're basically letting strangers add random content to your pages. Turn them off or at minimum require approval.
Reading settings - make sure you're not accidentally set to discourage search engines. Sounds obvious but I've seen people wonder why their site isn't indexed for weeks before catching this.
The tag pages WordPress generates by default are also a problem. Every tag creates an archive page with thin duplicate content. Either noindex all tag pages or just stop using tags entirely. Category pages are enough.

I don’t see them having any significant impact on SEO. The developers of WordPress understand how important SEO is for users, so they optimize things quite well by default you don’t need to worry too much about the default settings.

You need to make your wordpress SEOptimized .
There are 2 very easy to use plugins that you must have if you want to make your website optimized .

Default/Basic wordpress settings are not good for the search engines .
 
For sure those default settings are holding blogs back, tweaking permalinks alone is a game-changer for seo, and dialing in comment options totally ramps up engagement and makes a noticeable difference

I keep reading settings sensible and sometimes switch off overly chatty comment options if I notice spam, but I’m careful with redirects.
