Not at all. They are not of any use now as they all no-follow.

If they have good content then yes, they can work. They might even start a discussion which could benefit you.

Spammy comments, however, get deleted almost instantly.

Yeah, they work. You just should not use automated bot, they are only good for tier 3. I do manual comments to authority page and each comment gives me anywhere between 10-50 referral traffic as well. If you are trying to rank local website, they work extremely good
