are backlinks really important then content.

There are both important.
Just take an example.
I have found the Alibaba Cave and i know the password of course. There are wealth for everybody. Now
This is the content ok? it is unique and peopple will stick forever in the cave.
If i dont advertise my findings then nobody will came.
So MAke good content and some backlinks that make sense and drive traffic to your spot

Of course backlinks matter. In my opinion you need both, awesome content and awesome backlinks.
You've seen sites that rank higher for a specific keyword than other sites that have more backlinks? That's not unusual. The quantity of the backlinks is not important, it's quality that matters. Besides, links to the root domain matter as well. If a site is a trusted high pagerank sites, which has an article targeting a specific keyword, it will most likely outrank rather new and not that authoritative sites for the same keyword unless the other sites carefully build high quality backlinks.

Simple answer is "Both are important Content + Backlinks".

Well what you really want is traffic.

So quality content with long articles helps you rank for many long tails = traffic.

But you will never rank for the major KW's without links and other signals = Major Traffic

So the answer is do both, but start with the content, even for the simple reason that the more pages and the older your site is, the more "likely in real life" it would be to acquire links.

Nothing screams HE'S DOING SEO, more than a one page site with 5k links to it.

FPS

You can rank a doorway page on very competitive keys such as 'viagra' even when there's a single 'viagra' word in the title with whatever contents in the body. You just need a trusted site, such as university or govt, where you can place such page, and lot's of incoming links from both trusted and shitty sites.

Imo content does not matter much. It should be unique enough, it should have a wide vocabulary (it's better to have
an autogenerated content than one of these shallow 'articles' which are written by barely educated people for peanuts), and that's all. Links and domain trust - that's what matter. With highly trusted domain and good links you may use even non-unique content - it will outrank the less trusted source.

Content does matter when site is reviewed manually though, and less trusted sites have a big chance to get earlier or later under manual review when they are about to appear in competitive SERPs.

Sort of like using a .gov as your own Web 2.0?!

Sounds decent, I bet those are gold dust.

It all depends upon the level of your keyword competition and the content. High competitive keywords need backlinks to rank where as low competitive keywords may have a chance to rank with only having high quality content. Both should have more importance in IMO now a days.

You don't make a site and expect it to rank just by doing one of the above. Perhaps one has more weight than the other but seriously, if you want to rank in serp, no matter what the competition is you build links to the site and at least have a decent content.

I have mentioned this before and I'll say it again, serp rank is determined with so many factors, backlinks and contents are just one of them.

Backlinks never replace a content, if your website having a ton of unique and quality content then it will never be required a backlinks. Quality backlinks just enhance the worth of website in search engines and your website will becomes more authority because of backlinks.

I agree with the other member here, that for someone who is named the_SEO you have no idea about SEO at all.

Now if you are talking about those whitehat authority site, well I completely agree that they have outstanding content that users refer them to other people, and as a result they gain natural "backlinks" from this people. And when google pick up this natural backlinks their site slowly turn to authority site over time.

Natural or not... It is called "backlinks"

Like others have mentioned, it depends on the competition mostly.

The way I like to do it, I find a good (or great) expired domain, put a sh1tload of content on it, mind you that is high quality, unique, the whole shebang content.

I then start interlinking these pages by using partial match anchor text, I never use the same one twice.

In a few weeks time that website will start ranking for low/med competition keywords without sending a single external backlink to my website. (ofcourse, the domain being an expired domain will have previous links to it. I just don't start building links of my own in the first month and it will be decently ranked for a lot of keywords already.)

This is nonsense, you can have the best content in the world. If you dont build links, you wont rank.

Unless you use social media marketing to drive traffic and eventually get links, then you need links.

Nope. The right content can get you ranked without any backlinks. However, with popular keywords, you need good content AND good backlinks. Quality is more important than quantity, but you can still rank terrible content with terrible backlinks, it's just not a recommended technique for long-term ranking.

Also OP, don't forget that a site with good 301 redirects (that are blocked from site explorers) can also appear to have few backlinks when it really has thousands. Nothing is as it seems in seo...

You've gotta have enough content to get indexed and have good on-page SEO, and you've gotta have enough links to get it noticed and ranked!
