Are Backlinks from relevant sites with low authority worth it?

Yes, backlinks from topically relevant sites are useful. It's always better to get links from sites like Forbes, Inc, etc. but if you have to choose b/w a DR 50 non-niche relevant site and a DR 30 niche relevant site, always go with the 2nd option.

yeah I'm referring to DR 0 to 5 , but I get your point :)
 
Google values backlinks from the similar niche sites.

So these backlinks that you are planning to build from websites that belong to your niche (even though if they have a low DA/DR) are very valuable. You should certainly go ahead!

Just make sure to do some basic checks before you ask them for backlinks. For example - Their traffic estimate and backlink profile.
 
I once helped a small biz owner with an excel problem the owner was having, little did I know he would write a post on his blog, thanking me with a link to the small biz I was working for at the time. Years later his blog had grown and the link to my old employer was the most powerful one they had.

If your site is brand new and the content on those relevant sites is good, then you can go for it.
 
Yes, lot more factors to be addressed while building links, not the only authority. So, if that site is relevant to you and has a good on-page, link profile. Give it a shot.
