I put this on another thread but since it is likely less related to the update I felt a new thread was more appropriate...

Background- I have been hand building links for an e comm site that is a legit, licensed biz. Yesterday the update roll out and we went from 2 to 13 and now back to 10... I read about the update right here and was worried I did something wrong. I have been doing all handmade links at a steady pace, very diverse anchor texts, about 300 indexed pages in G. The only down side the domain is young. Other than that I have been doing things the right way. Anyway I had several hundred good links from real sites and this morning during my investigations I am seeing THOUSANDS of links indexed in majestic SEO most coming end of September early October....

Well, in my case it is becoming clear about 2 weeks ago I was neg SEO'd... I am digging deeper in Majestic and are finding low PR blog comments with my anchor text and then the comment is simply kw spam.. So its EXACT MATCH ANCHOR as the anme on the comment with our url, and the comment itself is kw, kw, kw, kw variation1, kw varition2, kw variation3..

So if my site is called bestredwidgets.com they are using Red Widgets as the anchor with my url and then commenting "red widgets,red widgets,red widgets, good red widgets, cheap red widgets" making it obvious spam. This is the 1st time I have heard of or seen someone using my exact anchor to spam, it was risky because maybe I would have gone up for that kw, but it in fact worked dropping us off page 1 for a few hours and now at the bottom since yesterday when we were #2... Main kw diversity was around 20-30% before and now 75% of all links have the KW.

The only good news is that all of the hard work getting content on the site and getting good links provided us a measure of insurance i would call it, so when I diversify the text again and build some more good links this MIGHT end up making us stronger since now we will have volume and quality. We will see how it goes....

Same happened to one of my customers. I've seen this before and only suggestion I can give, since you probably already know that SEO doesn't have one universal solution is this:

Keep building high quality links.
Links like web 2.0 with custom themes, removed first post. + Keep adding articles to them.
- Write and publish a high quality press release through (There is a BST I always use for this)
- Check your anchor diversity. As you mention, a lot of the time they use the main keyword to fu** up your site, BRING THIS NUMBER DOWN ASAP!

They tries to nuke one of my main sites, but as the links before the attack had almost only high quality links, nothing happened :)

Wish you luck in getting your rankings back.

Well I am thinking that google had some respect for our site only becasue instead of disappearing from serps with this obvious spam attack, we just dropped. We are going to hit PR WEB and pay several hundred to hopefully get picked up by news sites. Originally I WAS going to use the main anchor since the kw diversity was good, but now I will have to use a different (higher traffic) anchor.

I may have to look into some hand built web 2.0 options as I need the diversity and one guy can only write so much and create so many web 2.0's by hand. That is if I can find them here.

Sorry man, i dont agree with this completely and here is why.

I have done some major testing on negative seoing someone. The truth is this.

If your site lives up to the standards of G, everything about your site is pretty much ok, and someone negative seos your site, you will come out unscathed.

The only time you will see the effects is if your site is not up to standard, has many issues that could be affected by Panda/Penguin and someone negative seos your site then yes, you will be affected.

Done many tests on this already and my conclusion is to get your site up to the standards of what Panda/Penguin expects and dont worry about anyone blasting your site.
 
What i do is that I buy spinets (never reversed engineered how the seller was doing it, so im stuck to buying them) and generate 100 unique copyscaped articles and use them as articles. Works perfect with WEB 2.0. What you can do it create the accounts with a software, forexample SeNuke and login manually and change theme etc.

I would suggest you hit some Wiki sites and article directories with those kind of articles to bring down your main kw %. Try to use as many different wiki & article directory platforms as possible if you are going to do this.

Again what helped me might not help you, so don't take my words for it :)
 
You may also want to add more diversity to your links. High quality blog comments, articles and videos to dilute the negative effects.

Another idea would be to send an email to the blog owners to have them remove the links. Some will and some won't. Trying to remove thousands of links is a time-consuming bitch. I have not worked with Majestic and I don't know if they provide the contact email for the blog owners but if they do you may be able to send an email to all of them asking to remove the link. I've asked some to remove links in the past but I've never had to do it on a scale like your situation.

I disagree man.

I can even prove it on your site if you give me your site details. If one knows how SEO works and how to avoid penalties then I'm pretty sure he knows how to purposely put a site into penalty. It really isn't that hard if you know how.

I dont buy that for new sites. We have 3 sites, only 1 affected all 6 months old all with a few hundred pages of content, all with the same CMS, this site was ranking the best and it was the ONLY one hit by keyword spam and the only 1 affected, but since last night it has gone from 2 to 13 to 10 now its at 9... So maybe if you have an old domain with 1000+ unique pages then ok I see it, but if you have 300 good links and then suddenly 5000 low pr blog comments saying KW KW KW KW show up I am pretty sure you will see a hit.

Like I said if I did not have 1 site that was nearly identical and another site VERY similar that was not affected I would say it was the algo, but its not...
 
I'm new to the forum, but not to the scenario you've described. Consider using the 300 good links you already have as a link wheel and continue driving traffic to your main site using them. By maintaining a reasonable amount of link velocity for the main site and pushing traffic to your existing backlinks, you'll improve your off site SEO without having to establish new Web 2.0 properties, and you won't risk leaving a footprint of new or related properties being suddenly used as a link wheel. Wishing you well...
 
Because of this I finally realize that SEO is really not easy. I'm not giving up on IM but After I learn one thing or rule. Thanks to updates and new info I would be killing my site or customers if I had any. Hopefully one day I can cope and figure how to stay one step or on par with this crazy game call SEO.

Didn't push through. He sent me a site but I have no guarantee if it's his site or his competitor. Wouldn't want to destroy a poor innocent guy's site just in case.
 
Hey guys, I just saw this back so here is the update...

Google still hates us, I used the disavow tool and most of the links I disavowed no longer show up in our backlinks in GWT. Problem is it took lots of time to track down most of these and in the meantime more are showing up that I did not see before. Google only shows a portion of the links and majestic crawls a bit slowly.

I have contemplated taking a day and tracking down the rest of the links using gwt and majestic and just might do that tomorrow.

Rankings have not changed much we are on page 2 now for "buy" Product but still back on page 4 for "product" which was our major keyword. Good news is we brought aboard some affiliates who are making good money for us and themselves and we moved up to #1 for "product" in yahoo and bing. While this does not replace what we were making with google the combo of better yahoo/bing rankings, affiliates and press releases has helped us recover 90% of what we were making. IF/when we get our google rankings back our sales will be obscene because we are "making it happen" even without google right now...

We signed up for PRWEB and we issue a press release every day so some of the time our press release makes it to page 1 for the keywords we are hunting (albeit at the bottom) for a day or two. Also the Pr's are spread among 4 sites so its not just the one that was hit that I am focusing on.

I have also (as of a few days ago) started backlinking the press release backlinks since most of these fall on news sites with pr 4's+ with some authority.

Long story short, the Pr backlinks have not seemed to help much but have not hurt, I got some visits and sales directly from the Pr's or the sites they landed on so that is good. The disavow tool seems to work because links that were previously showing in GWT no longer show, but the effectiveness is inconclusive since we have not improved much but perhaps another update is needed to see improvement. It was an update that hit us with our drop even though we were spammed a month earlier. In addition there are more discovered spam links that I have not disavowed yet, so as I said until I cathc up to all the bad links and/or another update runs I cannot say for sure that it was a failure.

Overall though the health of the business is strong due to PR's, Bing/Yahoo, Social and affiliates.

Congrats man. Good job on working hard and still "making it happen" without Google.
 
hmm.. it maybe a minor change in ranking that has nothing to do with your links. Sometimes results fluctuate when an update comes.

However, If you still don't want those links (the negative ones) then you can use Google Disavow tool and disown them. You can download your backlink profile from Google webmaster central and upload the file in Google disavow tool with links you want to disown. Remember the file size shouldn't be more than 2 MB.


Wish you best of luck with that and do share your experience of using Disavow tool.
 
u need to build links from high pr homepage blog networks. itll be best if theyre niche related, but if not it's still great to get pr 2-7 links from homepages. look into some providers here.
 
I've never had to fight bad seo, because I'm usually doing it on my own :S. For your domain age you must be doing something right for getting attacked.
I would like to know how PRWeb is working for you. Posting a press release once a day an ideal technique?
 
Negative seo can be possible if a guy knows how to do SEO, age or PR does not help much if anybody determined to kill a site by negative seo. Of course the effect will come slow if there's good age and PR - but that's just matter of time and volume of work. Long story short - if 1k spammy SB blast can penalize a brand new site - a 10 years aged with PR-3 site will be penalized by 50K or 100K spammy links, but it will be penalized eventually.
