hey,

i'm considering moving onto joomla from wordpress. i'm working on an authority site and after reading a few threads, i came to the conclusion that using joomla would probably be better in the long run.

so how difficult is it to set up? how difficult is it to learn? is it as easy as wordpress?

any advice appreciated. also, any tips? anything i need to know before i start?

cheers guys and girls! :):):)

I have ran a web design company for around 4 years and used Joomla to create around 100 client sites.

If you would like any specific pointers drop me a PM.

James

thanks james :)

would you say it's easy or difficult to get going with it? wordpress was easy...

Wordpress is easier and has more plugins for seo or IM in general.

Joomla is a bit more complicated but if you spend some time the result will be better.

Learning the basics will not take long! Maybe you can try to replicate a joomla website you like.

Some of the extensions that you will be using (these or alternatives ) are:

Code:
k2 , akeeba backup(you can clone, backup etc websites with this), joomsef (sef urls), jce editor( a better editor), blank module (you add custom code in a module),
If you have questions post them here!:)

Good luck!

awesome, thanks. and thanks for the extension info...

just wondering though, would there be something that i need to avoid the site getting hacked? like some sort of plugin? i don't trust the other website owners i'm going to be in competition with, lol... :)

Never had any security issues with joomla although my experience is not as extensive(at a commercial level) as the guy that posted above:)

From my experience joomla is more secure than wordpress. If you want to minimize any possibility, try to avoid installing extensions with no or few reviews or with known security issues.

Have a look here and if you find that any extension that you want to install is listed, try to see why it is listed and if the problem has been fixed.

Code:
http://docs.joomla.org/Vulnerable_Extensions_List

There is a section with security extensions at the joomla website. Have a look but i would not worry that much:

Code:
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/site-security/site-protection

I forgot to say that the main joomla website has a showcase with voted joomla websites for many categories. You can visit it and have a look for ideas etc

Code:
http://community.joomla.org/showcase/

I hope your move to Joomla is a smooth transition!

It is one of the better if not the best CMS in my opinion. Some people will have their own opinion of course.

It is wrapped tight with security and is very reliable.
I have had now issue with SEO with Joomla.

If you need any assistance shoot me a PM and I will be happy to help you out. I have been working with the Joomla CMS from its beginning. I am with out a doubt an expert!
