anyone try 1&1 for domains and hosting?

I use them sometimes for domains because of the special prices but they really suck. You also have to watch their billing because sometimes you buy from them at special price and they still send you the bill with full price.
I've used several domain companies and the best I can recommend you is namecheap.
For hosting I've also tried various hosting companies and I can say nothing beats hostgator. If you are looking for cheap hosting then I would recommend you use hostthename. From all the cheap hosting I've tried this is the best I've liked so far.

1&1 is for absolute noobs.
If you dont have a clue about anything: choose them, you MIGHT be satisfied with their service. But dont expect your mind to be blown: Their servers are quite slow and their hosting performance is a nightmare.
Believe me, 1&1 sucks. Especially their support is worse than anything else.

I use 1and1. have 3 big dedicated servers and 3 pro hosting accounts and all together about 180 domains with them.
Their front end control panel is slow, thats one thing that does annoy me. But their servers are good in my opinion, upload and download speeds are very good.
They are reliable and hardly ever have any downtime.
Support for basic hosting and stuff is pretty crap, but their Dedi support is excellent.
Alot of people don't share my opinion, but that is my 6 years experience with them.

1&1 are 'Ok' at domain registration. But, they have limited options in their control panel; it's like 10 years out of date. And, cancelling domain registration or transferring to another registrar is a complete nightmare.
I would also stay away from G0Daddy; Ok for buying domains, but their interface is cluttered with upsells.
I also like namecheap as a registrar.
I would also advise against registering a domain and hosting it with the same company. Keep them separate. Most companies are good at one thing but not the other, so best not keep all your eggs in one basket.

I host with 1and1, which is how I got to this thread. My best advise is to avoid them like the plague!
1. There servers (for shared hosting) are slow.
2. Their control panel does not always work and you have to call support to get their assistance. This just delays putting your site on the web.
3. Support.....what's that? They transfer all phone calls to India and your technical support IT rep is a normal man or woman who will read what their computer screen tells them about your problem. You may or may not get the issue fixed.
4. They love to sell you on special prices, but stick it to you a year later on regular prices.
I am leaving them and looking for better hosting. I am sick and tired of all the problems they cause. 1and1 is not a good hosting company, but they will take your money!!!!!

1and1 is one of the worst companies in the industry. They are a mix of incompetent and sleazy. Plenty of other, less fucked up companies out there to do business with.
