Anyone still ranking their sites only with blog comments or these days are long gone?

I' not sure if they are improving my ranking but I've been writing detailed useful comments and they provide me traffic - which is all that really matters. No **** do*****. I don't really care as long as it is a quality blog with low OBL. I have no problems getting comments to stick like this - blogs, reddit, any other communities. I really wish I could outsource but this would require a lot of niche related knowledge to be done correctly.

Plus 1 for what silverback says. Especially important is not to worry about follow state, both no and do follow work well for low and medium competition keywords, it sometimes takes a little more trickery if it's more competitive.

I think they are great for mixing up engines your links are coming from. Just don't over-do them IMO.

I don't use blog comments for ranking sites but I still use them for tier 2, tier 3, indexing purposes if they are auto approve.
If they are comments from moderated and niche targeted blogs I use them directly to my money site.

I forgot to add that I also use blogs for anchor text diversification - I use raw urls to save my key word anchor text for high quality high PR links. Medium PRs I generally use generic "click here"s. Looks fairly natural that way too. Someone posting on a blog comment or forum is going to grab a cut n paste (cause it is easier and people tend to be lazy) whereas someone writing a genuine article is going to take the time to put in a proper hyperlink. Of course I'm a beginner (that has read ALOT - 3 years of back post on BHW alone plus countless blogs, etc) so take my words with a grain of salt.

My "spamless spam" philosophy has been working; I have a good number of Wikipedia links to my main money site because I add value to the article as I'm dropping in a link. That's another No **** link that drives traffic AND affects ranking.
