Still don't understand how Google just doesn't see it.

I'm new to the SEO newbie (about 5 months) and I'm extremely frustrated with the Google Places intro. Now as I get my site to number 5 on Google for very competitive keywords I see that this past week Google introduced a 10 pack for Places which now pushes my top 5 returns to page 2 so now I'm on to optimize Places too. Just to be clear can we optimize our Google Place entry just as we've been doing with our websites or is the only link juice via citations from local entries? Thanks in advance for the insights.
