I used to make a few bucks per day in 2018 but my site is no more getting into top stories.

I am also interested in hearing the stories - I just secured a .ca domain with SERP traffic of over 500+k, it might not mean anything but after some rugged keyword research and SEO, it might just mean something.
I just started a few weeks ago, I know that the volatility can take me further down, but I'm currently on page 2 for the keyword.

How old are those SERPs, though?
If you're talking a few weeks, you may be able to regain some traction if you're talking years there's no way.
I'm about to delve into health news for my blog (currently gets 200k+ traffic p/m, just applied to google news will come back to let you know).

Not on my domain, but the keyword in my domain gets searched 500,000 times a month.

The story will be same for most members here. It was abused badly and now top ranking are with only big sites.

You will need a big team to make money with news websites. Now news websites have lot of requirement like frequent update is required.

I used to get $1000/month with one news site. This lasted for a year or so then I sold it. It was OK-ish side money but you need to put a lot of work in it to get the right news published before big sites.
Then you end up at page one and get massive spikes. This lasts a day or two, then you need another news that will get you traffic. My traffic was mostly US.
The best part is you get BIG media mentions (links) and more traffic and more authority. My site looked so real I (because I was writing all news under fake name) was even called to be a guest at CNN so I can talk about the current topics. It is a wild ride, but you need a team to run a real news site.

I think I was getting around 80-100K uniques per month not sure about RPM

Google News has changed a lot and there is very little chance that you can get into top stories now. Moreover, the effort required is super high, and the revenue is not that much.
