FB does not have categories or directories like fanpages do. Anyone know of good keywords to search for popular groups I can join to?

well that depends a lot on the topic of the groups you want to join, or that doesn't matter you just want the biggest of them in any niche?

Its hard to find because most groups are either small or full of spammers. Example "make money" is full of spammers or kw game, music etc most are not US groups. That's why I ask.

sometimes small groups can be better, in big groups there are many posts and fewer people actually see the posts others make. The smaller groups on the other hand are less spammed and usually serve a purpose, if you target them correctly with the thing they need they might give better results, you will need to post on more smaller groups but it might be worth your time.

I echo what Coitza said, smaller groups and targeted are far better! Here is a hint, if you are looking for US traffic, try searching for groups based on county names

Try searching or clicking the hashtags too. Some groups post with hashtags. But it depends on your niche of course.

I saw, most 'Add Me' type groups get huge ACTIVE members.
