If you live close to a Microcenter this is the greatest place to find cheap i5 at $180.
You can bundle with a dual-gpu z-68 Motheboard for ~$300 and that's a great deal.
Ram is really cheap (Newegg has constant ram deals) and I'd say for 8 gigs, it's not hard to find it in the $40 range. Now I'm going to list parts from Newegg because they have great prices, but if you live in CA, consider buying from Amazon since Newegg taxes CA residents

Hard Drive like people previously mentioned can be salvaged from your previous computer or you can buy a new one. $80 for OEM 1TB spinpoint f3.
Graphics card: Gtx 560 on Newegg I see for as cheap as $170 and can probably find lower prices too since gfx card deals happen quite often. When I bought mine, it came with a voucher for Arkham City, but not sure if the deal is still going on.
Case: Any case currently on sale but I aim for one around $80.
PSU: I bought a 650w for $20 dollars from Newegg, but that deal is over. But you can easily get one for $30-$40. However, 650 will be hard to SLI if you ever plan to go that route.
DVD- drive: Can use from your old computer or buy new for ~$25
I think those are all the essential piece for a computer and adding up the prices I'm getting somewhere around $725. Of course if you don't live near a Microcenter it will drive up prices by ~$50-100 dollars (like I said their i5k deal is amazing). Even then it's only around $800 dollars, and that's without any research on my behalf looking for good deals on Newegg/Amazon.
Also, looking at some previous replies I do have some comments:
8 gig ram for $180 is expensive as hell, at least if it's US dollars. Look at Newegg they sell ram for amazingly low.
Don't go nameless PSU. What's the point of getting great parts if you can't supply enough power and it breaks your system? Corsair, Antec, and Seasonic are great brands (their 650w are equivalent of 750w to even 800w of crappy brands- very energy efficient). I personally used XFX and had no troubles with them either.
i500k is the best deal in my opinion (and the general majority's opinion).
Cases can be dirt cheap, but I like to get a higher quality one (make sure all your parts can fit inside). The reason is gfx, cpu, and mobo will be outdated (and pretty fast too), but cases and PSU generally last a while so cheapening out on that is a bad investment.
One more thing: I did not include Microsoft Windows and since you are building your own computer expect to buy a license. That or get it via some other means
