The particular type of theft i'm refering to is people buying the books and returning them while they keep them, anyone have any suggestions that could possible disincentivize people from doing so.

Sell them cheap, really. Just make sure you stuff them with affiliate links, then when people illegally obtain copies, you can still potentially make a profit from them. Stealing things on the internet is very common, big companies and DRM can't even prevent it.

If we're giving suggestions, I'd suggest:

http://stopebooktheft.com (No affiliate link or anything)

I've used them for a while for 2 of my eBooks and they've been awesome at removing anything that pops up on torrent sites or wherever. They also monitor it monthly.

I once created a thread about how to get free ebooks on the web (Link: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/black-hat-seo-tools/594336-1-000th-post-get-method-almost-any-digital-download-wso-cb-etc-2.html )

Just figure out something to the opposite of what I shared there and your files will probably be safer ;)

Ohh and regarding refunds, just add a no refund policy or sth like that, so that when they try to refund, you show them the policy and they should shut up ;)

Once I saw a clickbank vendor that printed a transaction id or similar inside the pdf, so this way if the ebook was shared or published for free then he would know who did it. It's not a protection but at least you could add a warning in the ebook stating that there's a footprint in the ebook and if the buyer shares it for free he'll incur in penalties, or something like that.

You can't really do anything. I'd suggest making it cheap so that people wont have to torrent. It's actually a huge cycle, people don't want to pay since they feel like they're getting overcharged so they pirate it, sales go down company has to increase the price of the product, torrenting increases, company inflates prices even more. Look at CD's 10-15 years ago they were only $5-8 for new releases. Now they're $15-22 same with movie tickets and games ps2/xbox games were $20-30 now they're $50-60.

Embed the eBook in some sort of reader software (could just be an ActiveX control for a PDF or something).

It's not a bad idea, but buyers with tablets or smartphones wont be able to open it.

i wouldn't worry about, it seems that the general consensus is that the most pirated movies, make the most money. The most pirated albums sell the best on itunes.
All you can do is provide links to your extra purchasing options, and add some sort of value to the after sales to ensure you recoup the money elsewhere.

Sell cheap, and add monetization methods within the book. That could include links to your own site or affiliate links. Selling cheap will make it more obtainable for more people. Chances are, if you sell it for a few dollars, people will be too lazy to pirate it.
