Bought myself a PS4 this weekend and to be frank, it's shit. I can't see a difference in the graphics, it's got no new innovations like it's predecessors (PS2: DVD player, PS3: Blu Ray Player, wireless controller etc), you can't customize the XMB and you have to pay to play online now. Oh, it's got a pretty light on the controller which seems to serve no purpose.

Is it just me, or does it seem like a rip off?

I got both the PS4 and Xbox One on launch.

Both are huge disappointments so far, mainly due to the lack of games. Both launched without many "launch titles" and there is a severe lack of games.

The graphics are a slight improvement, but I guess it's too early to tell at the moment. Best looking game so far IMO is NBA 2K14 (which is also on the "old gen" consoles).

Did I mention the lack of games?

Remember when you upgraded from PS2/Xbox to PS3/360? The difference in grpahics was light years ahead. Not this time.

Re lack of games; agreed. From what I read, all the good stuff starts coming out last q of this year. We shall see.

Thanks for the heads up on NBA. Wolfenstien: The New Order is a good game although the graphics look like the last gen could handle them.

I was literally about to chime in with the "no games" portion. I have a PS4 and I literally cycle through 4-5 different games (NBA, FIFA, Madden and BF4/The Last Of Us Remastered), and I don't mean that in a good way whatsoever.

If you don't have a PS4 and are going to buy one, don't do it. Buy a gaming computer and buy great games for $5 a pop when the Steam sales come around.

How much is a up to date gaming computer though? 2 grand plus I'm guessing.

Depends, what sort of games are you looking to play? My PC is fairly old, would cost roughly £1,000 to build but i'm still running games on top settings.

I actually got mine when it came out. It's nothing great like you said, but some games are definitely nice to play.

To be honest, I only got it out because all my other mates were getting it too and we usually play as a group whether it's Fifa or BF. Ripoff? Probably.. but I still enjoy playing on it every now and then.

Graphics improve over time on consoles as developers are able to figure things out and find better ways to do things and can push the hardware to its limits. That is a long ways away. Most games look shit because they have to be developed with last gen in mind, all the AAA titles are built for ps3/xbox 360 still, and just slightly sharpened for ps4/xbone. You're not really going to be seeing anything amazing until 2015/16. I personally don't care about graphics, I just want good games, which neither console has delivered much of yet. Right now PC is your best bet to get almost everything good. Stuff only coming out for last gen, like dark souls 2, console exclusive games like dead rising 3, titanfall. Destiny will also be out for PC. Plus all the stuff that's released for pc only. Not to mention anything not multiplayer you can just pirate :D. I've been a console gamer all my life, so with most games I just use xpadder and a xbox 360 controller to play, and i'm pretty happy. You can get a decent gaming rig for under $1k

I kind of feel like I am turning on my 14 year old self when I say this but I have honestly barely touched it. Bought it on a whim and then left it to gather dust. Nothing revolutionary about it but I will wait until Destiny comes out before making my mind up.

Right. The console just appeared, as for hardware it's 10 classes over PS3. Working in the gaming industry a while back I've picked up alot on how the industry works.

When a new console appears, the first year will have are shit games (mostly ported from the earlier version) that's why you don't see any improvements in graphics. An A title (top game, COD, Assassin's Creed, etc.) takes about 2-3 years to develop, from the concept to the final release. Won't go in the details and the stages.

Another thing, when it comes to console gaming, all breakthroughs and improvements come with optimization, the better use of the limited resources the console has. When people test an alpha or beta game, they use a dev console (it's a pc looking console that costs about 2-3000$ and has a lot more resources than a console), they do this because the game code isn't optimized for a limited console yet. They focus on functionality and graphics at that point, mostly fixing flaws and bugs.

Also, when a new console gets thrown in the market, game devs have no clue how far they can stretch the resources the console has, they start to use the console at it's fullest capacity after they've released about 3-4 A titles on the market and have a hands on experience on what that console can support in regards to optimization.

The conclusion is that you've bought the console too early to benefit from it's capabilities. In about 1-2 years I assure you you'll see a big difference in graphics compared to PS3.

PS: IMHO you've made a good choice getting the PS4 vs Xbox One. It's better overall, the games will be cheaper and the support is better at Sony. Time will tell anyway :)

Just like the PS3, there wasn't much in the beginning besides Resistance. I got a PS4 early and paid for it that there was any games out. The graphics are way better than PS3 so don't know what you're seeing. Also, graphics get better as the console cycle gets longer so don't expect the world just yet. Give it 3 years when developers are more experienced with the hardware. I'm going to rebuy it when H Hour releases so I can get some sort of SOCOM back.

I am not ashamed nor embarrassed for liking my PS4. I have yet to experience any issues others have experienced.
And if I do, I still own other consoles to keep me busy until the issues are resolved.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just because I like the PS4 and think it's a great system, doesn't actually mean it is.
Some will dislike the next-gen of consoles, while others will not. They are opinions, not facts.

I understand the argument of "it will get better in time", but the difference in graphics was much more pronounced in the PS3 over the PS2.

I almost bought an Xbox about 4 months ago but decided against it. Instead I bought a gaming PC and am glad that I did.

I like flight simulators and think a gaming PC was the best for me. I did research the flight simulator software available for the Xbox but there wasn't much to choose from.

Maybe I'll buy an Xbox or PS4 later on if they come out with better games that I like.

That's the law of diminishing returns

Just wait for Uncharted 4 to have your mind blown at the level of detail. When you're expectations are different, you'll appreciate the differences between PS3 and PS4 more.
