Anyone experienced with duplicate content

Lets say i copied an article, will probably get duplicate content penalty soon. But what is the workaround? Lets say i copied 1k words. So if i write my own unique 5k words (on the same page where is copied content) it will be enough to avoid ban?

or copied content is copied content no matter how big % of unique text my site is?

No true. Many people add parts of the same content within their articles. Think of definitions for example. You won t change a definition just to avoid duplicate contrnt. So using 5k words of unique content and 1k copied content still is around 85% uniqueness which won t trigger a penalty for sure:)
 
A long long long long time ago a Google engineer told me they use 13 consecutive words the same as the signal for duplicate content. To account for unknown offsets and boundaries this would mean that about every 6th or 7th word should be different to cover all your bases... assuming the information was correct and is still used today.

If you think about it it makes sense... 13 consecutive words in English is like a 13 digit base 25000 number which is astronomically huge.
 
You're better off hiring a cheap writer to rewrite part of the article and the checking it with copyscape. Penalties suck later in the game once you're ranking and a shortcut comes back to bite you.
 
How do you know if you have a duplicate content penalty?

What sort of "penalty" are you fearing?
 
Hire a writer to mix it up. Check copyscape and google to see if the article is duplicated.
 
Don't risk it, just read the article to get an idea and write a new one in the same tone from scratch or hire someone to write the post.
If you are going to use copyscape use a premium account, from my experience the results are different from the free account.
 
You've time and someone(or yourself) to write 5k words, but still adding 1k words on the same page which is actually copied. I can suggest rephrasing the copied content, so you dont need to fear about penalty or devaluation of your 5k words content. Or you could still change the random words and check in copyscape before publishing the content on page. Not really a big problem as you think.

It a fact that the last update was just that dup content .

yeah thats exactly what i meant: ill have 85-95% of uniqueness.
hiring a writer or rewriting it myself is not too good option for me (filthy niche + i need to repeat this process over and over :])

i guess ill give it a try.

Easiest way is to rewrite it in your own words. If you're a reasonably fluent English speaker then it shouldn't take too long, or just hire a native content writer to do it for you, most will charge a reduced fee for this type of work if you ask.
 
Copy and pasting the content which is actually present in the web is bad for ranking. SO keep avoidng this by rewrite the 1K article in your own words or hire someone who is good at writing the content for you. Also The content uniqueness is the main thing to rank for nowadays. So keep focus on content and must have 100% uniqueness in your article.

Ok, let's talk about this.
So it indexed in Google.
But it isn't raining after 3 days.
So, for duplicate content, Google search a whole sentence. Whose site comes up first, yours or theirs? More than likely, the other site came up first, not shocking , Google has that site "marked" as the most relevant in relation to that article and probably that keyword(you probably took it from the number 1 site).

So because you're not having equal, and immediate results comparable to the copies content, it must be a "penalty".

Well this would be the strangest "penalty" because you can take over the ranking for the phrase and keyword with a little hard work. So, when that happens, does that mean the original article site is now penalized?
 
It's just risky to have duplicate content on your site which would result to Google not favoring your site in rankings. Just to be safe, tweak your words, rephrase it so you won't run with issues later.

Best way is to outsource your contents.
