I am just wondering if anybody has experience with this on their websites. I have a site with the following situation:

A) spammed links on blogs etc, not excessive but maybe 50 per day over Dec
B) PR change in January no increase or decrease.
C) Changed folder structure a few times as had a fair few broken links
D) I had about 500 pages out of 3500 with fairly similar ? deleted now

Anyways about 2 weeks ago the pr of the top level of the domain went from PR1 to PR0 and when i check pages with external links that page has been removed from the list and had the majority of the backlinks.

Well i am pretty sure i have been given a penalty now, but i do not seem to be banned as I do still have indexed pages and am still ranking. So my question is how long do these penalties usually last and is there anyway to speed up the process? I am working through the issues above to sort them out!

Many thanks

I'd suspect that Google has re-evaluated the PR of the sites/pages that are linking to you and that is why you've seen the PR drop. It's probably not a penalty, G won't penalize you for those spammed links, it just won't pass any benefits either.

not enough link diversity at a guess, you probably got seen as a spammer and canned

do you have any pages still indexed?

yeah i was thinking this but I don't think i am completely banned as i still have 2600 pages indexed? not really sure if this is a ban or a penalty and if its a penatly how long they usually last?

My guess is that it is a penatly but just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this as i am still ranking and indexed!

it's probably temp, are you sure thos backlinks are there form the blogs??

Some of my legit sites got knocked down one page rank each - some sites page rank four to three, one site page rank three to two, etc. in this latest update. Could this have happened to you maybe? If so just keep building and growing your site and hopefully you'll continue to build traffic and sales.

asyk: yeah most are blogs, some link directorys and some bookmarking sites but mainly blogs.

dangregory: I would agree with you if it was only page rank but the tld missing from webmaster tools and the backlinks to it? that seems strange to me.

I am puzzled!?!

I've been through one or two, search 'domain.com'.. is it ranking? Search 'domain' and no TLD. Are you ranking in pages 3-7 but previously higher?

Hi TerryUK

domain.com - ranks top of page 1
domain (no TLD) - ranks top of page 1

Does it look like a minor penalty for a few spammy links to you?

From what I've experienced no, but your serps have dropped?

nope my serps have not dropped at all, still indexed and still ranking...

My PR has dropped to 0 not big deal i guess and also in webmaster tools the external links page the main pages with all my links have been dissapeared.

So not sure really, my best guess is that google have flagged me for some reason and given me a temporary penalty (i hope) but just wondering if anybody has had a similar situation. I guess its really a waiting game but at least I can post the outcome for other people who experience the same.

Ah man, f*** PR seriously. I thought it was a bigger issue and your rankings had being dropped lol. PR0's outrank PR5 no problem, ANY NICHE. Do not stress about it, worry about your visitors & conversions, not PR (doesn't effect either).

Hi Terry,

Thanks man - yeah the rankings seem to be ok, was just wondering what was going on really with the PR and external links no longer showing up. But I guess you are right do not stress and get back to the main job of promoting it.

No probs mate, but serious PR shouldn't be in your marketing plan, high PR links = $0. Related links are your way forward. If your spamming links one way or another, do two or three posts so the page is saw to be related until it gets found out :D

Good luck
