Any work for an 11 year old?

Hey guys, I found recently that my 11 year old brother was interested in working with me. I asked him why, and he just said he was fond of working with computers and wanted to gain knowledge of the internet (not ***, seriously guys?).

I don't want him working more than an hour a day tops, a lot less if possible because I want him to maintain his childhood.
He told me himself that he wants to work and I think it's a great oppurtunity to have an assistant by my side helping me out on side stuff that could be of use.

I'm just not sure what he can work on that he's capable of. I don't want him to study IM or anything, just do a little bit of work that he's interested in that can help me out (I own an informative/entertainment blog) on my IM journey.
Any ideas? :)

Mate, I started when I was 11 no harm. It teaches him soft skills which helped me destroy interviews for university. I started making money and I was able to buy a car before I had a license. Its good for him. Let him learn, instead of playing dumb games all day. Learn the latest trends from him and exploit them. He has all the info of where the next big thing will be from the playground and get on it.
 
C'mon man, let him play Counter-Strike and stuff, he's way to young for this war against G. :)
 
Once he gets into this stuff,he will get addicted to the internet and the money involved in it. I would rather say let him enjoy his childhood with his friends by playing games :) His personality would surely be changed if he gets into im so early.

I would've been happier to have been fighting Google than dungeon rats in Runescape back when I was 11.

You could use him an assistant, getting him to create backlinks, possibly articles. He seems motivated, teach him a few things about IM.
 
Tell him to get off a bloody computer and get outside with a ball or a bat or go smash some windows!
geez he is 11, if he wants to do things on the PC tell him to look at moshi monsters or something

Kids have great thoughts every day thats the beauty of being a kid, tell him if he is really
wanting to learn stuff, then he has to have all homework completed every night, schoolwork
has to be top notch as well. Education first, play second.
 
Just teach your boy how to create a blog, he can start with blogger or wp, or you can tell him how to write an article in squidoo... it's a good start to learn writting and earn money, simple, and your boy can still play outside. Sorry for my bad english, not my native language :d

I'm young and I'd rather spend my time doing IM , which I benefit from, rather than playing counter-strike and listen to people rage on their mics 24/7.

IM hasn't changed my childhood, I maintain it at a normal level, and I balance everything ( IM & Socail Life).




Well I honestly don't think your 11 year old would want to do backlinking or something like that, kinda boring right?
Get him a blog on what he likes, maybe a blog of a game? Something he likes, so he will enjoy doing it.

com,on man if he is really intrested teach him.i wasted my entire childhood in front of pc playing games i wish if i know about im and all the stuff back than now i will be living on some private island but its never too late by the way.teach him if he is intrested and believe me there is nothing in dumb schools,universities they are crap u go there waste ur all time and after getting a crap degree try for a job WTF.and tell him to listen to this song everyday :D

I wish I had someone show me the ropes that young, I've wasted too many years rotting my brain playing video games, if he decides he likes the work it could be beneficial for him now and down the road. By no means is it taking away his child hood, just let him balance both.
 
Tell him to post articles on your blog. Then you can review the articles written by him for an correction.

For some strange reason that was also my first thought.

It might be interesting to just ask him to find out what his friends are doing, what they really want. Some sort of trend/marketresearch.
I'm pretty sure it can be interesting to find out what the youngsters are into nowadays and then you can find a way to monetize it. Give him some responsibilities in that project.
Example: A couple of years ago everyone was playing Farmville, it started with the kids but later the adults joined in. The way to monetize that was with guides for extra gold or whatever. I know some people that made a lot of money in those days because of that. Especially if you're the first one to discover a demand in the market for which noone is offering a solution.
Just a random thought but as for me I really have no idea what's "new" or "hot" now for kids that age.
 
I guess it would depend very much on his motivation and capabilities, but at least the motivation part is in order then, right?

I started learning HTML when I was about 10 and then built my own static website in it back in the 00's. I learnt it from a course folder from 1 or 2 years before that my dad gave to me (he built his own site, too). I also started doing some things in Photoshop... err... 7, I think. Today, I work as a web designer and starting early, I think, did help quite a bit.

I think as long as you limit his computer activities to x hours per week, he should be fine. I don't think his tender soul will get broken and/or corrupted or anything like that. Hell, you see kids his age washing cars and mowing lawns, don't you? Just limit the time that he spends at the computer and make sure he involves in other activities too. That's what my parents did and I turned out okay :)
 
tell him to create videos for your blog then tell him to upload and teach him couple things about keywords
 
Alright guys, thanks for the responses.
A lot of you are telling me that his childhood will be ruined, but READ THE OP.
He's interested in this himself, so I should let him. And besides, I'm limiting him to less than an hour a day and giving days off so he can play. He has PLENTY of time to play, even has his own iPad, his own laptop, a PSP, and a new XPERIA Play phone on his birthday!

I only want to do this because he's interested, I can use a little help, and it seems like he's being spoiled nowadays so he could use a little disciplining, in my opinion.

I'm not going to get him into IM, I'm not going to teach him anything about IM. He'll just do some work that he's interested in, and so far I think these are the best ones:
- Captcha Solving
- Creating Articles

Anything else seems like it'll bore him.
Keep the ideas rolling. :)
 
My kids' pediatrician said that when children express an interest in something, then the parent should try to help if it is within the parent's means. He may be the next Bill Gates for all we know. He may have a gift. I think you should buy him his very own dot.com, show him some teaching sites that he should read, give him a web utility program to make his site, and let him bring out his creativity. What better way to learn the internet than to be a part of it.
 
Articles. If he is good in English, have him write 2-3 articles/day. $10-$15/day is good for an 11 year old.
